Co-op - do both players must own DLCs?
I'm going to buy this game on the next sale, with the first one and all of the DLCs, but to play with a friend, is it enough to force him to buy gift him the base second game, or does he need to own all of the DLCs too for us to play together with any races and expansions?

Nope. The only thing both players need to own if they want to play together is mortal empires. Besides that, as you own a regular dlc you should be able to play it even if your friend doesn't own it.

Thank you!

You can play together on the vortex map too. But in vanilla you can only do races that have the same goal, so only lizardman+lizardman or skaven+skaven.
there are mods to lift said restrictions though (simply type in "vortex" into the searchbar when you are in the workshop on steam for this game).

And, before you get disappointed, Mortal Empires is not an free DLC. You need Warhammer Total War 1 in order to download the DLC. But the DLC itself is free, it was made that way so people who already owned the first game dont have to pay for the same thing again.

It'll depend on what you want to do.
The DLCs aren't shared, so if someone only has the base games, they can only play the base content and other free DLCs.
In Mortal Empires (the combined map unlocked by having both games) you can play with any combination of factions. But in Vortex (the base WH2 campaign) what is able to be played together is more limited.

Yeah, that it what I want to know. Nevermind Vortex, in ME if I for example have all of the games and DLCs, but my friend owns only two base games, if I host, will he be able to play DLC factions and have other DLC related bonuses?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
