Can't play in full screen below monitor resolution

I'm currently playing on a 4k monitor, but when I try to switch to a resolution like 1440p in fullscreen mode, the game window minimizes and won't open until the resolution reverts. This isn't a problem in windowed mode but low res windows don't take up the full screen. I've seen similar problems in other games where lowering the resolution below the monitor resolution will minimize the game, but this is the only game where I haven't been able to bring it back up.

I have the latest driver for my monitor and graphics card. Any ideas?

In the event that anyone ever searches this problem and finds my post I'll go ahead a contribute what I learned.

Diagnosis: The problem seems to be related to windows resolution scaling. When changing the resolution in game, my pc would try to change the resolution of the display to match. My best guess is that this was causing the game to lose focus (as though I were clicking on a different window) which automatically causes the game to minimize. And it would do this every time I tried to maximize it again.

The Fix:
I'm still not 100% sure why this solved my issue, but I went into Nvidia Control Panel and deselected "GPU Scaling" under Manage 3D setting --> Image Sharpening. With this setting turned off, my display still changes resolution to match the game, but it no longer minimizes so the problem is solved.
