[SOLVED] Very poor performance on Ryzen 5 2600 @3800MHZ, GTX1070 8gb, 16DDR4 RAM @3000MHZ [SOLVED]
I am experiencing a very bad performance on any(!) Total War game I´ve tried so far (covering ETW; NTW; S2TW; R2TW; TWWH1+2, TWAttila).
My specs are as I stated above, and I have already done anything I could find in order to improve performance on my pc (including checking for parked cores, setting priority to high in registry editor, debloating windows 10, installing a program that automatically clears my RAM Cache every 5 minutes, boosting my CPU tact rate and all kind of stuff like this).
However, my performance is exceedingly bad in TWWH2 (my favourite one btw.)
I´ve set the shadows to medium, I disabled SSAO and did everything in order to make it run smoother, but I´m experiencing battles with around 30 - 40 FPS (15 units vs. 15), which is really bad. On the beginning of an engagement, everything is fine, I have a high framerate and my GPU is running on 98% (as it does in other games). But once the units start beating the crap out of each other and the combat animations start being rendered, the framerate drops to 40ish fps which is unplayable and buggy hell. And this keeps on until the end of the battle (even if the units have already stopped slaughtering each other and if the guns have become silent again).
The part that is ♥♥♥♥ed up about this is the fact that I cannot seem to find any bottleneck, because my CPU nor my GPU are at 100% load (or even close to this!) I have enough VRAM and RAM btw, I´m not bloody stupid.

I just don´t know what to do right now, I´m stuck between loving this game and hating it for it´s poor optimization for AMD´s Ryzen CPUs. Maybe someone has a 1000IQ idea or tip? Feel free to share, I´d be really grateful.

On which resolution? I play with the same CPU and a RTX 2080 in 1440p.
Mix of High and Ultra settings with max unit size.
Usually its stable around 60 FPS but can drop to the low 40s in very big battles.

I´m playing on 1080p 75Hz with ultra graphics settings (shadows on medium) and with fxaa as antialiasing (which is sufficient for me)

Yeah i have Antialiasing turned off, dont really need it at my monitor size in 1440p.
In general, this game is actually very GPU demanding on top of needing a decent CPU.
Even on the campaign map my RTX 2080 is at around 85 degree and that is with a 60 FPS lock.

While your 1070 is a decent card, i remember playing the game on my old GTX 1080 in 1080p and i had to lower quiet a few settings to medium/high to keep fluid FPS in massive battles with ultra unit size.

Maybe try with "huge" unit size instead of "ultra". Gives already quiet a performance boost and still looks impressive enough.

Also, do you play from a HDD or SSD? In my experience this game profits quiet a bit from a SSD during the battles and the loading of effects and such.

The weird part about it is that the RivaTuner (overlay program of msi afterburner) informs me that my my GPU are not completely utilized (GPU only around 50% and CPU cores ranging from 50% to 80%), that´s why I can´t find a possible bottleneck and what actually makes me wonder

Just a thought, have you checked temperatures?
Are you playing with dx 12 or dx 11? I find that in recent updates dx 12 tends to run better on this generation of GPUs.

yes, I have, it´s alright (CPU around 55 degrees celsius and GPU around 60-65 degrees )

that´s what I´m going to try next

playing on dx12 I mean

buggy as hell, I get around 3 fps with dx12
Interesting, what is your corpse lifespan set to? Maybe decreasing that helps.

120 seconds, as i said, it all runs fine and smooth, but as soon as the fighting animations start, it turns into a buggy mess
SO is it running off an SSD or HDD? even in battle that has an effect.
Starcret Apr 16, 2020 @ 11:39am
it´s running on a SSD
Starcret Apr 16, 2020 @ 11:39am
it´s the same SSD as my OS is on, does that cause any interference?
