With heroes you're stuck at the cap.
You can unlock more armies (lord recruitment) from the Mortuary Cult menu with money and canopic jars.
Having to gather 1600 jars for another army when each victory only gives me 30 jars each is murderous.
Canopic jars come from everywhere. It is even a king and hero ability which should be enabled as soon as it is available as an option. Then also, each primary centerline research unlocks the ability to recruit a new tomb king army. There is also a fifth tier building which unlocks an army. Then LAST is the ever more expensive paying to specifically unlock one more army.
Getting started with the TK factions is the hard part. Once you are rolling, free units means combining lower tier units and adding better as they become available and never missing a turn to add more units to available slots in your armies.
The mechanic I would have liked to have seen would have also been heroes added on as attachments rather than taking a unit slot, but if that were the case, once TK were advancing they would truly be unstoppable.
EDIT: You can also double this up with getting Rapanse stuck in a sack city, then the Lords you keep killing her with will get the research buff too.
