Are treasure maps worth it?

I keep asking myself are treasure maps worth the effort. Perhaps I simply have terrible luck, but I tend to get 1.5-2-5kish gold approx. when digging up treasure.

Considering the length of time to travel, I have to ask myself why? My fleet captains are better off coving things. My mournghouls are far better off killing things. The last hero, you never need more then one per army, and it seems a waste of gold to have them on the payroll as treasure hunting won't even negate their operating costs.

Are there rare items or something that can be dug up?

I have not done a single treasure map. Cant be bothered and not the reason I play this game. No strategic importance and I make enough gold without.

If the treasure happens to be where you're going next, then yes. Otherwise no, since it generally takes more turns to reach, than what it would make as a reward.

They are worth it if you are using heroes to search them out. They give some money and sometimes equipment. Getting enough Equipment for all your lords/heroes can be a pain sometimes so this helps that.

I like to save them up in an area then send a hero to collect the lot. Else a Lord in the area will go dig it up since it's on the way.

I use agents to dig them up because I use agents to scout around unrevealed sections of the map anyway.
