how can i play warhammer 1 & 2 on one map?

i saw a video when someone said you can play both games at once in a giant map.

Buy Warhammer 2. One of the campaigns is a combined map including the new WH2 map and old WH1 map.

You can only play a race if you have the relevant game/DLC but they'll still show up on the map to fight even without it.

you need to have BOTH wh1 and wh2 in your steam library. Then when you launch a new campaign for wh2, you'll have the choice of picking "mortal empires", which is what you're asking for : the map of wh1 and wh2 combined.
That's an important point, if you only have bought one of the two games this won't work.

Then, if you respet the criteria above, then yes, you can play either wh1 or wh2 races that you own (so base races of both games + any dlc race that you own for that game. Example, with just wh1 and wh2 games owned but no dlc, you can play bretonnia, empire, greenskins, vampire counts, dwarves, high elves, dark elves, lizardmen and skavens on mortal empire map. If on top of this you were to own for example Norsca DLC for game 1 and Tomb Kings DLC for game 2, then you'll be able to play both those races on mortal empire on top of the 9 I listed before).

You need both games to play the giant map, at which point you can use whatever race you've bought.

Warhammer Total War is a game in 3 parts.
Basically Warhammer 1 and Warhammer 2 and Warhammer 3 (not yet released) are stand alone games, each with their own specific DLC and free D:LC as well as their own campaigns, multiplayer, quest battles (akin to historical battles in regular TW games) and Blood DLC.

HOWEVER.
All the content you own from Warhammer 1 carries over into Warhammer 2. This means that in multiplayer, skirmish and on a special campaign map (unlocked when you ownboth games on the same steam account); you can use all your Warhammer 1 armies that you own and all the DLC content that you own.
This includes the Blood DLC

So basically everything you own for Warhammer TW 1 carries over into the second game, the only thing that does not appear in the second game is the campaign maps from the first game, otherwise its all in TW Warhammer 2.

i got the game now, but do i need to have the first one installed too ?

No. You only need to own the game.

You might have issues with getting FLC from game 1, if you don't install it just for getting the FLC. Some have issues, others don't. I think there's a workaround, if that's the case, so you don't have to install it. But don't ask me.
