High Elf Campaign Goals
When I started I played high elves first and I've always had issues with their campaigns, even recently after a year of playing. Every time I send armies out of Ulthuan, things go horribly wrong. Am I meant to stay in my donut and defend it or is there something else I'm missing?

No, you can move out just fine of course. Some more information would be helpful: Difficulty, Map (Vortex or ME), where do you send your armies to, who causes things to go wrong etc. Generally, High Elves are among the most powerful factions in the game, so no, there is absolutely no reason to stay in the donut whatsoever :- )

My High Elf goal is always the total genocide of the Dark Elves. I don't think I've ever went East of the donut in ME as High Elves.

I play on easy and the last game I tried was ME. I cleared out the cult of excess, greenskins and the guys who start on the shrine of khaine (orange emblem, I forget the name). After that Morathi came from the west to be annoying, I pushed her back and tried to send a few 2 armies (out of 4 or 5) to take her out and protect Alith Anar. The Norscans and Vampire Coast faction next to Hexoatl came over to fight, a rogue faction took a few of nagarythe's settlements and the Red Duke came from the east to punch Coethique and Chrace.

I get the impression I should confederate/conquer all of Ulthuan before venturing out.

Your first goal should be to unite the donut - by force or by confederation.

Your main threat are the Dark Elves, they won’t leave you alone - that’s pretty much a guarantee. Build up your settlements on the donut, piece together a handful of mid/high tier armies, and invade the DE lands closest to you and do your best to just kinda roll them up into the north until they’re knocked out.

You shouldn’t have to worry about the east as long as Bretonnia and the Empire are still big players there (and they can make good allies/trade partners), the Lizards will also leave you alone unless YOU start hostilities with them so you won’t have to worry about the southwest.

The Dreadfleet will probably declare war on you at some point and come at you from the Galleons Graveyard so you can either make the effort to dispose of them or just keep a force near Lothern to intercept their occasional raids.

Once you put the DE on the defensive you wont have to worry too much about the donut. It’ll just turn into a bit of a slog as you push Malekith/Morathi/Hellebron into a corner.

Once you’ve done that, it’s more or less game over unless you feel like creating a multi-continent Elven Empire or if Rakarth and Malus are still around and you want to go after them.

go kill the dark elves
edit: definitely unite Ulthuan before doing that though. confederate or kill, either way works, take all of ulthuan first

You can go where you want, you can also easily pick an ally as high elves

Are you suggesting alliances with the other high elves instead of confederating/conquering them?

Honestly, that’s too risky and doesn’t give you the economic power to launch an effective campaign abroad against the DE.

You also can’t rely on the AI to either actually help you, not start dumb dumb wars, or not get themselves invaded and cause a problem back home when you’re off with all your armies.

no, empire or dwarves, so you don’t have to conquer the entire map. And a defensive alliance isn’t that likely to ♥♥♥♥ you over if it’s with a strong faction like dwarves (if they survive)

fighting everyone on the map isn’t a great idea if you don’t have to, atleast get trade MA NAP with some of the order tide

and yeah, confederate all the HE

High elves are the strongest faction in the game when played to their strengths. If you're struggling with them you might want to look up guides or watch a let's play from a skilled player.

after 5 turns of tyrion you are asleep , play something way more cool and fun : the dark elves. Better troops , better economy , better everything. HE Having a strong economy at turn 120+ is not important , the game is over at this stage .

You should forget about the orange DE, and probably even the orks. As soon as you've killed the cult of Excess set sail to the west and go for Morathi before the makes a landfall on Ulthuan. Take her province and everything will be easier from then. Be careful though, because Hexoatl will declare war at some point.

Engage in diplomacy, try so that the High Elves do not fight among themselves, then everything will be in order. I usually merge the main region of Lothern, then destroy Noctilus, and go hunting Frogs in Lustria.

After the Frogs suffer a crushing and shameful defeat from Tyrion, I usually go to the old world to clean up there.

you dont want to go east. aside from the high queen you want to go north west and rotate the map south. avelron you are to kill the troll and viking bro to the north east after getting the donut.

they have the safest start. idk whos worst most of the dark elves or that corner where imirk snitch and the last defenders start. the only delves with good starts are the kraken who has the best and the besty boy. kraken gets so much free money eating lustria and shoving north on top of his mechnic you can chomp on helves with black arks depending on how much you like to fight and how long you want things to go. lustria is just stupid easy to take.

I find the HE position really unsafe. It's so easy to get attacked anywhere.
