Skaven DlC
Just finished my first very hard campaign playing as Avelorn. I've never played a Skaven campaign before, want to, but hear they're no good without DLC. Is it the Prophet and the Warlock I ought to buy or the other one?

Twisted&Twilight has a mega fun campaign with Clan Moulder as you can have C4 molerats that literally blow up armies :D

Or get Prophet&Warlock for the basic ratlinggunners and jezzails. And Clan Skyre has nukes, whatcha want more?

And skaven are, by no means, no good without DLC. Plaugeclaw catapults can carry you a lot, with skavenslaves or clanrats(if you play Queek) as fodder you can win very early.
And a good unit against lizardmen are globadiers, ratlingunners are way better due to range but they still do a whoppin.
Flamethrowers for non-armored foes, who are also really great in autoresolve. Very good for a Clan Rictus campaign for rolling quick over the darkelvs as they got not a lot of armor this early. And you can get a full stack of flamethrowers at turn 12 as you start with an tier 2 settlement (dont know if you also do in Vortex).

Its pretty fun to use other units which other say are "bad" and still win against the ai.
Globadiers and flamethrowers ARE worse than ratlinggunners. But you still can win battles, just a lil more effort needed.

Oh and btw. dont bother with skaven undercities, if you have any just build the food building (the one that gives 1 food and when upgraded 3) and dont bother with it further. Its the most effective way of using them. When you get to know the race more and can handle it better, you can experiement with undercities more :D
Unless you play Clan Pestilence, try to keep an ally (or enemy) close to your cities, and build the plauge cauldron in it to cause plauges. If its an ally, make sure they wont get wiped out, if its an enemy, just besiege them with an skavenslave spam army and deal with any rebellion that may pop up (skavenslave slingers spam should be able to autoresolve any rebellion as long as you dont let the rebellion grow).
Cuz plauges for Clan Pestilence give your cities AND armies buffs!
(and NEVER build the vermintide building!! it sucks and even if you get all the upgrades for it, it still sucks!)

The Prophet and the Warlock would be my clear standout then either the Twisted and the Twilight or the Shadow and the Blade. Twisted/Twilight comes with Throt who's a really fun LL but its stuff isn't as useful when you're not playing as Throt I'd say (also comes with the Sisters of Twilight though and they're one of my favourite factions personally) where-as Shadow/Blade comes with a few things that compliment the Ikit Claw Skryre doomstack pretty well (and you're pretty much buying Prophet/Warlock for the Ikit Claw Skryre doomstack).

Think I'll go P&W: I need to get to grips with the Lizardmen, too.

To be honest, they really don't need any DLC. Tehenhauin (the Prophet half of Prophet/Warlock) can buff skinks quite handily but your end game doomstacks are still probably going to be stegadon stacks and they come with the base game.

Clan Skryre is the way to play Skaven, yes yess. Don't buy DLC unless you find it for half off or more somewhere though.

The prophet's faction is my personal favorite in the game. It gives a bit more depth/benefits to the lizardman campaign mechanics which I really enjoyed.

Regarding Skaven, I've never really been able to get into them but the rattling guns are fun.

Same.

I could never quite understand the obsession with Skaven.

They were/are an incredibly popular faction on the tabletop. Like I get their weird and wonky weapons and mutants are sorta cool but still…I don’t get it.

if you dont have ratling guns be ready to weep. the mortal empires very hard are universally cancerous without weapons teams. snatch has one of the worst skacen armies. that corner is such a blight if you choose to go eshin i would rush south to confed queek or north to get hellpit and it should be obvious why hellpit up north is bad. if you go south i would race to the lustria to grab the guy there. you have all day to grab ikit. ikit just doesnt die like the others.

ikit i easily the best skaven campaign because if you win with him you can eat the world all the same so you dont even have to bother with the campaign.

skavens have a way of thinking to them. once you get going its almost a joke how easy they are.

I once tried a few turns as one of the base game Skaven lords but abandoned it when I couldn't figure out when or when not to establish an under city. Nobody seems to mention that on these forums. Is it a big deal?

Yeah I get how to play them I just don't particularly enjoy playing that way. I've had a few runs where I took them over turn 100 and was rolling pretty good but just could not be bothered to finish the campaign. Think they are the only game race 2 I have not actually finished with.

If you want the Skyre weapons team experience then Prophet and Warlock + Shadow and Blade (for poison wind mortars.)

If you want melee monsters then Moulder from the Twisted and Twilight is your jam.

Prophet & the Warlock. The Clan Skryre DLC has the most cool toys, way more features and mechanics than any of the others. The forbidden workshop, doomrockets, on top of your weapons teams... It's a no-brainer.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
