You'll eventually want to get a second ritual resource site. Ulthuan has a second one up north. While you're doing this, make friends with the friendly elves, particularly if one gets the other ritual site (if a hostile one gets it, just go to war). Send an agent to the southeast and southwest to make contact with the factions there. The Tomb Kings will like you and make good trading partners, as will Teclis and Markus.
Make sure to build walls in every settlement, and stick with mainly economic buildings. The HE economy is very strong, so once you get trade going, you should easily be able to field enough armies to defend against enemy incursions.
