1. it is not a classical strategy game -> it is a turn based strategy game on a big map with seperated battles which are more of a tactical nature and can be paused at will
2. if you want the full enjoyment you need to pay a lot of money (or wait for a sale)
you can perfectly fine play it with just the base game (and then see what dlcs you get - in that matter I am kind of a hoarder)
the difficulty is okay, you need to get used to a few things in the beginning but on normal difficulty it is enjoyable perfectly fine with an (imo) balanced challange
If you're new to TW games, there is definitely a pretty steep learning curve. Fortunately there are lots of guides out there to help. WH2 itself is a fantastic game though. If you're willing to learn the mechanics you'll find it very enjoyable.
Have you played civ-style games? The strategic portion is like that.
Have you played tabletop miniatures games? Or have any knowledge of sword and spear tropes (swords beat spears beats calvary, attack from the flank or rear, etc)?
Have you ever played Warhammer Fantasy Battle or (gags) Age of Sigmar? Do you know any of the lore? If not, do you know the trops about dwarves, elves, humans, etc?
You've never played an RTS? Never? Starcraft?
There is a lot of DLC but these have been added to the game over the course of many years. The base game is fun enough to play without them, then you can be selective in DLC purchases as you get to know the game.
Games Workshop is having their annual Skulls event in a few days, so I assume within the next couple days there should be sales on GW stuff everywhere. (GW is the owner of the Warhammer IP, which CA used to make this game).
You'll find opinions vary a lot on this and newer Total War games; except people who love them, their opinions all sound the same.
I would not make this your first RTS. Whilst the genre is not as popular as it used to be, there is quite a lot of variation in gameplay in different games. This game does not play in a way that is representative of many of them; none of the Total War games would be in fact.
That would include even the Total War games I like the most. I had really high hopes for the Warhammer Total War trilogy(the third one is expected later this year) a few years ago, but it's felt like a series of missed opportunities to me as a TW veteran.
If you are still interested, at least wait for a sale if not a free-to-play weekend so you can try it properly.
If you were desperate right now and on the verge of just buying it no matter what and needed talking-into or talking-out of it, it would help to know what you look for in games more generally.
Risky mention there but the folks who wanted game 3 or another after to be AoS are ever present if hidden and silent... for now (like Skaven)
Mentioning that... thing, AoS, in full is like that old chestnut about actors attracting bad luck if they mention a certain Shakespeare play by name...
The games are pretty simple and beginner friendly to learn once you know what counters what(like swords>spears>cavalry>range>swords).
Plus while there is a lot of dlc, all of it just unlocks new characters and units, not important game features. So for the most part all the dlc is completely optional and should only be bought if you like a particular faction and want more stuff for them.
EDIT: Also, forgot to mention, if you are going to buy it, WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW. Tomorrow is going to be the start of a special event and usually the Warhammer games get put on a massive discount during it.
I'd also recommend you play High Elves first as Tyrion has the safest starting position in the whole game, they're good at making allies and money, and their roster is very well-rounded and helpful for learning the basics of the game.
This harkens back to the "Why do dwarves have Scottish accents?" conversation we had a few days ago.
Hrm....don't take this as insulting; I'm just trying to build a frame of reference, okay?
How old are you?
What games DO you play? Which do you ENJOY?
Who is telling you this game is good? Is it a friend? Someone at a local hobby shop?
Do you read fantasy literature? Or at least seen the Lord of the Rings movies?
Do you like movies with Gladiators?
Are you just breaking into PC gaming?
Played D&D?
Dagorhir, SCA, HEMA?
A list of what games you play the most on your steam list would be a big help.
-Honestly i wouldn't know wich genre to say i enjoy all types of games as long as they are
fun, if you want to see more i made my steam profile public.
-No one told me about it, i just found it on steam a while ago.
-Yes i read fantasy, Cosmere, Lord of the rings, Berserk etc...
-Never seen one that i remember.
-I've been PC Gaming my whole life or childhood you could say.
-Nope.
-I don't know what any of that means :p
That said, I'd agree with others to wait for a sale. They put this game + all DLC at 50%+ off a lot. You can basically end up getting both games and all DLC for the price of one of these. You may see even bigger sales or bundles as game 3 gets closer.
If you decide to get them and have trouble getting into it, I recommend going to Youtube and looking up a video for first 20 turns of the faction you want. After you see how to generally play one time, the game becomes very easy. After that it's just learning the limitations of the AI, and what counters what in battles.
I didn't see a comparable game but you seem to at least own other non genre typical games and I also saw some strategy games. As long as you read the ingame descriptions you'll make decent progress and if you get stuck anywhere there's still google and this forum.
If you like Samurai, crank up Total War Shogun 2 and play that a bit. The basic frame of the game is like this one...except the graphics are much better, there are monsters, magic, and lots of sizzle...but still, you'll have to deal with controlling 20/40 units in a battle with tactical considerations.
Your game collection suffers from a number of gaps: no RPGs, no turn based strategy, no builders. Do you read any gaming sites? Even if you play one genre of games, you should experiment with other genres...you may find the game you've been looking for your entire life. There are older editions of games that a pretty cheap that can open you to new experiences. ;)
My suggestion is:
1. Watch some gameplay on youtube; then remember these guys have been playing for years, so don't get discouraged: you're just trying to see what the game "looks" like.
2. Wait until Skulls even from Games Workshop; there are always sales then. SOmeone mentioned it starts tommorow?
3. Do some online reading about Warhammer; there are lots of wiki sites, lore sites, literally hundreds of books, etc. The Warhammer "genre" (they have a game for every style of play, even FPS) has been growing for 30+ years, and if you like to read you can probably find some of their trade paperbacks in any store that carries used books (and Humble Bundles often has bundles of ebooks for stupid cheap prices...though they focus more on the sci-fi Warhammer stuff).
4. Ask the community questions. We have our trolls like all genres do, but there are plenty of folks willing to answer questions as well.
