Is the quest to Confederate Karond Kar a trap?
While I haven't tried it with Lokhir i have tried it twice with Rakarth and both times, the -40 diplomacy penalty caused Malekith to declare war, which is kinda a problem when he usually will have more territory at this point and more armies, and also none of your armies will be near Karond Kar.

So I've been thinking, is trying to confed Karond Kar just gonna become one of those noob traps? The confederation penalty doesn't really seem worth it early game if the top dark elf is just gonna dogpile on you with the rest of Ulthuan and the old world.

Yeah its not worth it i think, i didnt opt to confederate. Like you said the other dark elves would probably just declare war.

Just stick it out in the old world killing bretonnia and empire eventually malekith will like you enough to have trade and non aggression.

I keep one army on the island for defense once the high elves start sending stuff my way and rakarth is just running around on the mainland ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up the vampires cause they infested the empire after i killed reikland.

just give malekith a bit of money and he'll come around. Also raid the hell out of Ulthuan, he will come begging for an alliance
Yes and no. If you confederate straight, without prior engagement, you'll most likely be at war with them quickly. My first campaign I'd confederated the shrine of kaine faction just before. Didn't last long.

I'd recommend taking a black ark over to DE prior to confed'ing.

Yes.. it's absolutely worth it, if only for the added challenge of keeping that territory while trying to complete the quest for altdorf, going through Marienburg first and the high elves in a constant hissyfit about you being so close to their island.

Ofcourse it's worth it.

I was thinking Altdorf is a kind of intended distraction for Rakarth.

I mean he is trying to confederate tot he West and the quest is East or SE. Seems odd in that you kind of have to be everywhere at once nearly in a way.

Sadly you can't afford to be everywhere at once, not early game at least. Because keeping armies sitting around to defend spread out territory costs not only tons of money, but also loyalty potentially.

Going for altdorf is the real trap
AkumulatoR Mar 22, 2021 @ 2:40pm
It's not a trap, it's an investment. Once you hit tier 4 it will make you lots of money. Also, if you allowed your reputation with Mal to go so low that he declared war it's your fault.
Spookymancer Mar 22, 2021 @ 2:44pm
As Rakarth you literally can afford to be everywhere at once, his faction supports it!
Think about it this way. You can instantly recruit a stack of carnosaurs, mammoths, giant wolves, etc, anywhere. Did the Red Duke break that NAP and rush albion with two full stacks? Hire a level 1 lord, fill their army with monsters, congratulations you've won the war.
'but monsters are expensive nyeh nyeh'
How fortunate that the primary method of getting more monsters is raiding and sacking. Which makes money. Money you can spend on monsters. You don't even need to build military recruitment buildings his campaign is so easy. And the quest gives you a free black ark!
Rakarth's personal army should be dark elf only monsters (war hydra, dragons) as soon as you can pull it off. Pretend your carnosaurs and mammoths are like RORs for other factions - you keep them in the recruit pool until you need an instant army.

You are supposed to raid them, not improve them!

Yeah, not worth one dragon for pens at all. Huge investment of time and energy.

Very true. Solid advice here. Poetry to any Rakarth player's ears haha
