That said, rakarths buffs make them excellent chaff shields.
They are feeble and die quickly and tend to be damaged even if you win.
But they do a surprising amount of damage and are very good at flanking, i rate them as rather good units, but do advice anyone using them to consider them expendable troops.
Do they still do that? They got nerf'ed quite hard in the patch.
That being said, that's not the kind of unit that you want more than 2 or 3 per armies, unless they're bufed to the roof by something.
They still have one drawback: Way too low melee attack for the model count, but research gives them +5, that helps. They're getting 200+ kills in my battles, and seeing them descend on some hapless units is terrifying. :)
Don't get me wrong, I love dire wolves, they're a staple unit. That combination of murderocity and mobility is great, but in rakarth's army, I removed them in favor of harpies, they're doing way better.
