Short version.

In game 1 norscan faction leaders used to spawn with a chariot doomstack after they get wounded. It was so consistent to the point that it became a meme. It could've been any of the generic norscans but since surtha ek had the most catchy name in it he became the LEGEND

so heres a copy-paste from a old thread on 2017 that should clarify

i could write a wall of text but im not gonna so heres this version "some info outdated" that should give you an idea of what warhammer 1 was like back then

"He's the faction leader for the Varg tribe, one of the two Norscan tribes that are on the map from the start. He's noteworthy because of the following three properties:

Norsca tends to be more of an actual threat than the Chaos invasion proper, and can be a thorn in an Empire player's side for an exceptionally long time.

Being a faction leader, Surtha Ek is always present and can't be permanently killed, so you'll probably have to kill him multiple times per campaign.

Thanks to dodgy AI, his army is almost always comprised of a mix of chariots and cavalry archers, units that a lot of players find annoying to deal with.

So he's become a bit of a meme. Felman Ingersson, the leader of the Skaeling tribe, is technically in the same boat, but Surtha Ek's name is catchier, so he's the one people usually reference."

to add my own info back before norsca was properly implemented they used copy-pasted chaos units

so norscas roster was literally just 6 units + marauder chieftan

norsca had 2 factions "Literally" aka the classic skaeling and varg "so felman ingerson and surtha ek" the units were marauders marauder chariots hounds marauder horsemen "i believe they may have had horsemasters?"

so because of a limited roster + wierd AI shenanigans + the fact that back then due to the way the chaos invasion was implemented that led to norsca "ironically" being more of a threat than actual chaos led to surtha eks army spamming charios and marauder horsemen "the 2 most annoying unit types to deal with"

and if you want an updated version norsca still does this "sometimes" to this day "bonus points if instead of chariots they happen to be mammoths" so yeah theres the meme origin hope this clarifies

BEYOND YOUR COMPREHENSION MORTALS
Suthra Ek is like Atomic bomb Ghandi from Civilization series. What started as a glitch, of sorts, became a feature. Even though Norsca moved on, Suthra Ek remained the chariot specialist with unique features, and, I'm sure, will only be immortalized further with future Chaos updates as the Chaos God of the wheels of doom

In warhammer 2 CA embraced the meme. Surtha ek start with his chariot mount, and apparently got beef with settra who is the real chariot lord.

Also as far as I know Varg is the only norscan faction that always join up with the chaos invasion, so he will be rolling out for you.

Atleast the chariot spams are gone in warhammer 2.

Also his name is possibly a joke about northern people of the UK called Geordies where in their odd dialect his name would be considered as 'So Thick' or 'Sir Thick'.

Also it´s a bit of a nordic patchwork, "Surt" being the Jotun ruling over fiery Muspelheim, and "Ek" just being oak in most Scandinavian languages.

I want Surtha Ek o be a playable LL.

If you put him, Settra and Grom fighting each other, then you got the perfect representation of Australia, where vehicle-bound marauders and wasteland emperors constantly clash for control of some resource or another.

But seriously, Surtha Ek would be a cool option, maybe starting in Albion, since Norsca only has 2 LLs anyway.

BEYOND YOUR COMPREHENSION

That was what you heard far more often in tww1 as surtha kek led his army comprised exclusively of chaos chariots and maurader horsemen that would drive you mad as you chased it off your lands for the 20th+ time in the end times

EK would be an awesome LL, agreed. he would need to start out on the plains though, chariots and all.

Not really, Britain's Celts were known for Chariots in the real world, so they could make him start in Albion, easily.

Probably start in the Southlands on Vortex, though.
The beef against Settra could be his campaign.
