Snotling Pump Wagons (Spiky Rollers vs Flappas)

I know Spiky Rollers have better melee stats and function more like melee chariots, whereas Flappas are shock chariots. But are they actually used that way? I tried recruiting nothing but pump wagons in Grom's army, that army was pathetically rubbish because there were a lot of hammers and no anvils... plus micro-ing so many chariots was a nightmare.
