The witch hunters can be used in battles for dueling other hero's and maybe lords, but they're better if used on the campaign map
The warrior priests buff your army using prayers
For generals depends on ur taste/gameplay. For exemple the captain is a fighter that can mount on a griphon so its very usefull (my preference) to harass or deal with artilhery etc. The huntmarshal one is the best for early game cause his arrows hurt the low tier units. So if low lvl or early game go for them he can do serious damage. The arclector I dont use it much but have its uses I guess as he buff too.
As for agents use them to pindown the enemy so ur ranged can do damage. They are small so u wont have line of sight issues making them better than any melee inf for this porpuse. Although the witch hunter one should be always on campaing map cause he can block armies this helps a lot when catching armies that try to snipe ur cities.
I always put heroes in my army that help my lord where they are weak. So I like putting melee hero's in an army with a wizard leading them. Putting wizards in armies that don't already have access to magic. Putting witch hunters in if the hero can't deal with heroes and lords. Putting warrior priests if I feel that the lord can't help boost the army. That sort of thing. I don't normally put more than 2 heroes in an army. So if say I have a warrior priest lord I'll put a wizard and perhaps a witch hunter in there. Of course it depends on what your fighting, what units are going into that army so on so forth. As Salty said check what they can do and decide.
