Malus has a very annoying potion mechanic you will need to get used to. He has weaker army/campaign buffs, but as far i played DE he is stronger in combat purely thanks to Tzarkan. If leveled up,he can quite easy delete multiple armies by himself. You can also start in hag graef as malus, just simply replace the lord in Hag Graef with malus, and go on from there.
Malekith overall is the better hero, especially cause his campaign buffs are much better and as he said hes a good fighter either way.
Malus is an absolute beast in fighting. My last game with him I had him fully leveled with the Sword of Kaine...lets just say he was wiping entire armies of fully upgraded troops by himself. Like he was literally unstoppable...
But his potion mechanic is annoying IMO and generally not a fun gameplay mechanic.
That being said, playing him in battles was super fun...
So you'll be able to confederate him pretty quickly.
Ending up with a best of both worlds.
Malus is at his strongest when you are not directly playing his faction. Since you don't deal with his potion he always has Tzarkan available.
Malus is probably the best killing machine out there in the battles. Even without tzarkan ability he is formidable. With the ability he can solo any amount of enemies. But campaign debuffs are so bad its not worth it.
