I've seen starting with the 2nd recommended several times. As for DLC it seems most advise getting the the 1st and 2nd game because they fit together to make the Mortal Empires campaign.

i would say, unless you want to play as the empire, dwarfs, vampire counts, or greenskins specifically, that you start with 2 first

Warhammer 2 is the better game and has better mechanics and magic system but if you only have 1 game you can only play with the races of that game. Single player campaign is better in Warhammer 2 as well.

If you get both games you can combine them into one giant map with all your owned races in a mode called Mortal Empires.

Warhammer 1 Races: Empire, Dwarves, Greenskins, Vampies.
Warhammer 1 DLC Races: Chaos, Beastmen, Woodelves.

Warhammer 2 Races: High Elves, Dark Elves, Skaven, Lizardmen
Warhammer 2 DLC Races: Tomb Kings, Vampire Coast
Warhammer 2 also has lots of lord dlc and several free lords as well.

Get both and combine them into one game launched via Warhammer 2 called Mortal Empires

there's not that much difference between the two prices when discounted tbh, and game 2 offers WAY better explanation (which are still nowhere enough but that's better than having less right?) for beginners.
Game is also way more polished and way more optimised.

If you start with Warhammer 1 try the Empire and if you start with Warhammer 2 start with High Elves.

Both those armies are the more traditional in how they operate compared to other TW games. Their core infantry are things like spearmen, archers, basic cavalry etc... So they are very easy to get to grips with.

Armies like Skaven or Chaos can be much trickier to get used too because they don't operate "like normal armies".

You will still likely lose your early games with Empire/High Elves but you'll get a feel for the game and improve each time. Plus once you've played for a bit you can look at guides and tips which will make more sense and be easier to pick up once you've played for a while.

Warhammer 1 has a good cheap price, a nice starting point. Plus nothing is wasted; all your armies and content carries over into Warhammer 2 (including blood DLC). So you can invest in either one; try it out and if you like it buy more to get more content
