Dark riders are so bad it's unreal
Seriously, is this a bug or something? The crossbow ones are fine but the melee version is awful. Am I missing something?

What are you using them for? They are basically just for chasing down archers and charging into the back of any engaged units. If they frontal charge any other unit they will probably lose, even against other light cavalry.

You're correct. They're awful and really not worth building when at tier 2/3 you can just build shades. Just give a retreating unit a volley or two to the back and they'll be done if they come back usually. Or even just darkshards.

Read their stats card. They're cheap light cavalry for skirmishing. They're some of the lightest cavalry out there.

They can be nice against Skaven.

Problem is that they're bad at even that. They lose to archers in melee.

Yes they are ♥♥♥♥. I mostly use them like chaos hounds/dire wolves only to chase down routing units or attack archers/siege weapon crews, but I would say they are worse at it than the dogs.

Right - this is my problem. Made this post because I had dark riders lose to a hellcannon crew in melee. Really just thought I could throw a unit of cav at an isolated artillery crew, but I guess not.

Which is exactly why I don't even use them. They can't even handle regular archers or artillery barley. So many more important buildings you should be building and dark riders building sure as hell isn't one of them. Not even close. You'd think a horse with semi armored people charging into archers would be effective. Not even close.

Ya. Like with anti large and anti infantry, there should be anti artillery and anti range or something. Whereby these units can deal bonus damage against artillery and archers without altering their stats much.

Light cav seem pretty weak in general not just dark riders. Unless they break the enemy leadership with the charge, they seems to take as much damage as they deal.

Which archers, though?

If we're talking about Elves, they have decent melee stats and for all I know you mean armored variants.

Yeah, I'm talking about HE archers. Reasonable to, given that we're talking about Dark Elves. They'll ♥♥♥♥♥♥ roll over peasant archers or skeleton archers with ease. And in a vaccum, Dark Riders will even beat HE archers. Of course, you never actually fight anything in a vacuum. I've had Dark Riders charge into a unit of HE archers and do literally zero damage.

Keep battle difficulty at normal - otherwise AI units get buffs to combat stats and stuff like Archers wrecking Cavalry in melee happens.

Also keep in mind that cavalry (especially light cavalry) relies on its Charge Bonus (to weapon strength and melee attack) and the Charge impact damage/penalties to overwhelm its foe.

Even basic archers can be a threat to a basic light cavalry unit if you do not tell your cavalry to re-charge every 10 seconds or so.
Its not like Age of Empires 2 where your cavalry will attack-move wreck archers 1vs12.
