Essentially there are 3 main versions of "Warhammer Universes"
Warhammer Fantasy, which is what this game is set in. This universe was essentially destroyed in the end times, and replaced by...
Warhammer - Age of Sigmar, which this game is NOT set in
Warhammer 40k, a futuristic universe that, despite the name, is NOT related to the other 2. It is not in the future of those 2, it is a seperate universe. Horus Heresy belongs in the 40k universe.
All 3 have great books, it depends on what you're looking for. 40k is obviously a lot more Sci-Fi than the 2 fantasy universes. Age of Sigmar still catches flak for replacing the old fantasy universe and killing off a ton of favorite characters, which fans hated when it happened, but it's totally fine with plenty of good books.
As for where to begin... it really depends. Books are written all over the place , there's no great beginning or end.
If you want to start a book series in Warhammer Fantasy, good starting points are Malus Darkblade or Gotrek & Felix series.
If you want to start a book in the 40k universe, the Horus Heresy is an excellent series to start with.
I would avoid Age of Sigmar if you haven't read fantasy yet because it can be confusing to switch back and forth from fantasy to sigmar.
There are thousands of books in all of them combined and tons of good ones. While you may get lost at times by certain terms, there are very few books that I would consider wrong to start with. Many of them are standalone books or series that don't require deep knowledge of the universe, so find something that looks enjoyable to you.
