And menace from belows.
That's the standard answer.
If you are doing clan Skyre and just want a easy way to test out weapon teams then i recommend just putting a bunch of engineer heroes at the front with your lord and spacing them to catch enemy units (put them some distance away from your weapon teams).
This approach also allows you to stack the damage bonus weapon teams can get from engineers (it quickly reaches rather insane values).
However it is (At least in my humble opinion) quite a cheesy tactic and it only works against AI since a player would just move past your heroes :D
If you have the new DLC you could try to use packmasters. They come on a fast regenerating mount (also far far smaller than the plague furnace) and can spawn a total of 4 unit of dogs. I don't know if they are better, because you need to also consider the fact that plague priests have more summons and can all of them get arcane conduit to buff a lot you magic in battle.
That said, you can also go with other single entities units, like abominations, or doomwheels, or even the new brood horror or the muntant rat ogre. They should all be fine. One thing i suggest you not doing is using plague priests themselves (or even engineers) as a frontline (expecially on plague furnace) because they won't last long. I mean, they will still perform better than stormvermin, but you also risk killing them (which is a cancer expecially if you get good traits on them).
1 Grey Seer
4 Plague priest
2 warlock engineers
1 posionwind mortar
4 jezzails and 4 ratling guns
4 plague claws
can work with 2 priests but 3-4 is better
about 2-4 doomwheels, they require a bit of micro - if you just send them in and leave em they wont do well
earlier in the campaign, slavenslaves mostly
