If you just have your armies in normal stance boxed together vs Skaven or Beastmen. Well that's your own fault. Learn of your mistake. Never move full march when nearby enemies. Always keep 25% movement (preferable above 25% due to the bug) so you can ambush stance.
Youll be amazed how differently the AI deploys it's armies if you go into Ambushes.
Also some lords get ambush defense in their blue lines. I've never bothered to take it though personally in over 700hrs of play.
Skaven, beastmen and Nagaryth (helf Emo dude with the bow) all lack the standard attack move. These 3 factions all get their ambush chance on their attack move.
Which is far stronger then lighting strike. A ambush allows them to bring reinforcements against a single army. A lighting strike attack removes ALL reinforcements, friend and foe. (unless it's garrisoned inside a city. And you lighting strike the city itself.)
Ambush success chance varies due to terrain, level differences, nearby heroes, followers, traits. Skaven can have well over 200% chance to ambush you.
So the best bet is use pure melee monsters against them, sit in a city and wait skaven show up, strike with lightning strike and try to reduce their numbers and quick aim to their main cities, faster you take them out easier to heal and less chance to get ambush.
walk as ambush stance will work but its very difficult without alot save/load in tomb kings area, those place have very low ambush success rate.(40-60 open area without trees)
Found the person who does not know how to use Tomb Kings vs Skaven.
I am talking about end ganes at 190-250 t,
when you face 2-8 stacks of t5 skaven and you still have limited number of t5s, you better cut their MC quick.
Tomb king is very bad in endgames.
Generally though:
Stay in cities when you can, try to lure them to you especially if they hang out in cities. Use your own Ambush stance
DON'T auto resolve if you get ambushed by some crap stack full of skavenslaves. Auto resolve is super in the ambusher's favour, where as you may be able to beat them if you fight normally. Obviously, this depends on the strength of the two armies
Run armies that are less vulnerable to ambush if you know you're going against an established Skaven army. Mostly, don't run armies that to be in specific formations, particularly heavy ranged. Strong, tough melee armies can often ignore a lot of the issues from Ambush
Second - pay attention to terrain you move through. If you hold your mouse over some particular area - you would see ambush sucess chance (for your current army), it woul dgive you idea where to move and where to evade.
Use encampment, if you have that stance. Would boost your defenses.
Lure. Use amnush yourself. Stay in ambush stance with your strong army and place your weak army just behind them IN OPEN. that way you would provoke attack on yourself.
And, ofc, most reliable. Kill them or make em vassal.
