How many armies do you use??
I usually wait till I'm 3K+ profit then crank out another army.. does that seem reasonable? I think I have 8 right now and I'm about to make my 9th. Oddly enough I think I'm pretty strong but I'm 3rd on the rankings of str.

20 as TK. 40 as Bretonnia.
4 almost every time, 5 if pressed.

2 sets of main armies supported by a smaller army for each of them and 5th one would be a defensive army if I feel my neighbors are getting a bit frisky.

I don't really go for a specific number of armies. I just go with whatever I can afford/need.

Kinda depends on the campaign. Usually try to make an even number as I keep my armies in groups of 2 almost always. Usually once I get to 10-12 I stop building armies no matter what my income is.

Rule of thumb is if you can afford another army go for it. Usually I only have around 4 armies at endgame thanks to supply line shennanigans though. Most of the game I only have 2.

Imagine if Brets still had their old supply lines. How much salt that would be.

Durthu: YES, as long as I sack other people first...
Bretonnia: YES, for the Lady

So then do you guys just never expand? I am treating this game more like a conquer everything kind of game.. and there doesn't seem to be a way to do that with only 4 armies, how do you defend all your cities?.. lol.. I was in a fight with 2 other factions and just the two of them plus the guys they send while I'm doing ritual was enough to easily overwhelm my at the time 5 armies.

Depend on which faction, you can get allies to cover you back(ordertide). There is also the wall building in settlement.

Thats the problem with questions like this. The answer will be different for different races, and different game modes. I used more armies in Vortex then I tend to need in Mortal Empires due to needing to defend my ritual sites.

as many as i can afford/with as big a loss pr turn i can afford without going bankrupt. playing horde/greenskin/WE deficit can be 30-50K pr turn as long as i have enough armies to make that back every turn
also depends on whether i have to deal with vanilla supply lines. if i do i tend to have small surplus much of the game and deficits for some of it de to the clunkiness of that mechanic where a single lord can cost more to add than actually recruiting units for the army.
my priorities change some when dealing with supply lines due to the exponential increase in upkeep, when not dealing with them ill leave most settlements halfdeveloped so they provide most of the income they can at the least investment, and all my cash goes into armies, with supply lines i tend to fully develop for more heroes etc

All LL available for sure. Then up to my need. I don't like to have too many even with lot of cash since I hate micro-ing it and then turn gets onto 20 minutes even without battle. Besides I like roleplay and too much lords I can't personify.

I didn't know that different races would have different numbers of armies? Are some races like just way more ridiculously powerful so you only need a few armies? I'm using the High Elves so maybe they are weaker.

High Elves can cheese the economy the best. They can get heroes that are either wizards or handmaidens with a perk that increase income by 15% from a local area. So you recruit as many of those as possible and stack them all in one province where you make the most money.

This will enable you to get ridiculous amount of money per turn when you got it up and running.

Other armies can get a whole lot of money when they sack cities of high value so it isn't uncommon for them to get like 100k from the largest cities.

The Vampire faction has research stuff that reduce the upkeep of zombies and Skeleton to 0 so you can fill several armies with them and only pay the upkeep cost of the general and the extra cost for each army.
