Won't launch after updating to win 10
*SOLVED*
Changing my desktop resolution to something else and then back fixed the issue. Something to do with it being detected as a remote desktop config...?

I've logged 100's of hours on this title on win 7, I upgraded to win 10 and cannot get this to run.
The launcher screen is fine, but when I click the bottom right 'play' button, screen goes black for a few seconds- then crash back to desktop.

I have tried..
-verify game files
- fresh install
-run as admin (both on game launcher and steam itself)
-all compatability modes
- All beta launchers
-Reinstalling C++
- reinstalling latest gpu drivers
-Resetting network settings
- Deleting launcher and wh2 %appdata%
- Deleting steam dl cache
- changing monitor refresh rate
- Force launch options to dx11
- turning off firewall/virus protection
- Deleting preferences
- Running older versions of gpu/windows
- Reinstalling steam
-Installing to different SSD
- Praying to sigmar

I am running a 7700k intel processor, 1080ti nvidia card.

Does anyone know what else I can do to get this thing to run? It's probably my favorite game and I've got every DLC, shame i can't play anymore.

I don't use mods so no Keadrins mm for me.

I selected "opt out of all betas" and reinstalled, also.
My launcher still reads as version 1.9.2 (version that ran before updating to win 10)
Is that the version that works for you?

The problem you are having is probably that you upgraded to Win10 when you should have fresh installed Win10.

That shouldn't make any sort of difference.

OP, after the upgrade, have you downloaded all the Win 10 updates, including Security and Visual Studio Updates? The "Black Screen then back to Desktop" crash definitely sounds like a runtime error.

Yes, I upgraded rather than fresh installed. As such that leaves some blanks, but every other game works great.

Also, I reacquired the C++ but did not manually find and download security updates. I've had win10 installed for 2 weeks and let everything update and have it set to auto.

I will look further into the visual studio updates- my C++ visual says it was last modified on the 14th of this month (a week after I moved to 10)

I've already tried deleting the %appdata% folders for launcher and Warhammer 2.. still no dice

Might be worth to run an SFC Scan and possibly a DISM repair (make sure you have some time to dedicate to the process.)

I've never done much with the cmd prompts and new to win10, not sure what to put as 'image' in the command lines.. took me a bit just to figure out how to elevate my cmd prompt to even listen to me. (hate win10 so far)

I doubt theres any repairs needing done, but will look into it after work tomorrow. I'll try a DISM check first then a SFC if that doesn't work.

Be nice if CA would be able to find somethin in my minidumps but their site keeps booting me out before i can write a report. (8 hrs so far troubleshooting this game, My buddy is a pc engineer and he is utterly baffled as well)

alot of gpu drivers are reliant on a certain windows update to function correctly i think. what you should do is start in safe mode so your gpu isnt being used it should use the internal one when u do this. once in safe mode(with networking) you make sure ur windows is up to date. once thats done UNINSTALL your current gpu drivers(all of them) even the old one from win7 and restart again in safe mod with networking then install ur current gpu driver again.

i had a similar retarded problem like this a long time ago and had to do some janky stuff like this to get it to work again .. but sounds like a gpu driver issue. also some of the newer drivers are complete garbage and actually make the game perform worse.

I'll give it a shot after work today in safe mode. I know my win10 is up to date, and tried an older version of gpu driver (3.8 something) then the new one (4.3 something)
Don't know if doing the process in safe mode is the key, but I'm down for trying anything new. Thanks.

Have you tried using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to clean any display drivers before installation ?

Please let us know if it worked

That shouldn't make any sort of difference.

That can make a huge difference. There's a reason Microsoft recommends you never perform in-place upgrades for any production machines.
thegeodemon Sep 22, 2020 @ 8:51pm
I did the safemode thing with the drivers- no dice.
All scans say my OS is not in need of repair.

I havent used the DDU, is that different than manually wiping them? (I cleaned out every old Display driver and C++ Vis studio already)

Everything I have done so far has no effect. Launcher looks fine, I click play and screen goes black for 10 seconds and back to desktop. REALLY seems like a driver issue but not sure what else I can do for it.

All other games work great, it is specifically this game. I don't use mods, so I don't think its a DLC/build problem. (I have tried every beta launcher also- same deal)

*Edit* - Just installed the Warhammer 1 and that works fine.. I wonder what is so different about WH2 that it won't work?

Here's an idea after reading everything you listed, delete your registry. Run "regedit" and go to "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\The Creative Assembly\Warhammer2" and delete the folder or what's in the folder (export before deleting to be safe)
