Do you have the DLC that adds huntsman generals (The hunter & the beast)? Otherwise you can't recruit them, only use the ones you get from a confederation.
I'm kinda leaning toward giving it a try, but I'm not really in the mood to start an all-new Empire campaign just for this.
Every DLC unit/lord/hero/faction is in the game regardless if you have the DLC's or not and you can often try out many of the DLC units and the like if you get them through confederation (but you generally can't confederate the new legendary lords / factions without the DLC's they are added in).
I believe it works to add the DLC to a ongoing game, but make a spare save just in case things go buggy (if it does you can disable the DLC and reload the save, then enable the DLC once you are done with your current campaign).
Buying the DLC won't cause any issues, you'll be able to recruit those DLC units and even confederate the DLC faction itself (assuming Markus is still alive).
