What are the High/Dark Elves exactly weak in?
They seem to have it all: good melee and ranged infantry, cavalry, beasts (including flying ones), magic, etc. They remind me (especially the High Elves) of being like the Empire in that they are well-rounded, but simply better.

So, what actual weaknesses in battle do they have?

Arrogance is their weakness

In all seriousness though, I'd say that yes, they are extremely well rounded, but they lack numbers. Also, I'd imagine they are vulnerable to armor-piercing infantry. They lack in the artillery department as well, and their most elite infantry are probably not as powerful as say, the most elite saurus infantry. In my mind, I believe they Are generally elite, but do not hold the absolute best in every aspect, except maybe archers. Lizardmen monsters and the abomination are probably better than any single dragon/hydra from the elves.

Also, lizardmen have the better casters, while Skaven seem to have the most effective spells

It's not that HE or DE have weaknesses, it's just that their units can be bested in the right situations

The weakness of Elves in TT is their low toughness, generally low armor except on characters/cavalry, and being expensive.

That's a good way to put it. They're strong racially but other races elite units can trump theirs in certain aspects. Chaos Warriors have stronger elite infantry, Slaan are better at magic, Dwarfs have better artillery. High Elves do have the strongest dragons in the game, though, and they rival the strongest monsters in the game in a 1v1 situation.

Both - Cost.
Both - Unit Numbers.
Dark Elves - Melee Defense.
High Elves - Melee Attack.

I don't know how strong their artillery is yet, or their melee line really is. I'll need to pit them against the empire for example to gauge them.

Plus the dark elves have the loyalty issue in campaign, whereas the high elves are going to be open to attack being in the middle of everything in the combined campaign.

Also a weakness specific to TW, you can only have 19 units in a stack. The Empire has a very well rounded roster too, but you just can't fit everything into your army at once.

wait, that's an actual thing? Elves field fewer units in a full army stack than other races?

No, he meant in general. You can only have 1General & 19Units in one stack wich goes for every race.

Their Weakness is the unitprice.
Example: You have 10 settlements & 2 Armys as the elves. However 3 of your settlements are about to be attacked by skaven (Low Tier skaven units cost next to nothing).
& since they are sneaky creatures, they probably have a forth army somewhere hidden ready to ambush one of your army's if you decide to play cat&mouse.
I think this would probably be my strategy as skaven.

Yeah think they have said if you have anything that breaks through armor it will mow down elves pretty fast.

So warpfire throwers, various plauge monks and death runners for skaven against elves!?!? Yes-yes Elf-things die-die.

Good point I didn't even check those. I guess that goes hand in hand with less models per unit.

Well as others said the Cost. Elves are Expensive. A so called Elite Army.
Unlike Horde Armies like Orks and Skaven who got cheap masses of weak Units, Elves got Very good but Few Units.
I got a Darkelf Army and i can tell you. Things that are possible with Darkelves are impossible for everyone else.
Like .. killing 120 Skaven with a single attack of one Unit.
Or getting Charged by 3 Bretonian Knight units and kill all attackers in a single turn.
Building a Unit with the Best Armor ingame for close combat, Wardsave 4 against Ranged and Magic, Can move over the battlefield in a single turn, cast spells and hit like a Hammer. (just one single Unit)

I think its a bit strange that someone said that Highelves Weakness is Offence and Darkelves Weaknes is defence. The Highelf Part is just wishful thinking and the Darkelfpart is only Half true. Sure Darkelves got only toughness3 like every Elf. But they got some really massive Defensive Units and most of all: They strike always first. If your Enemy is dead after your strike.. there is nothing to defend. <== Thats the Darkelf way to Defend.
