That's the issue here. If you're short and you use a short weapon, you'll never hit your enemy before he hits you.

Well the dwarfs in the hobbit had pikes just wanted to throw that one into the arena

Pikes also would fit quite nicely in tunnels i cant think of a better choke point than a narrow tunnel with some dwarf pikemen or Bill's.

Sure a straight tunnel.

What happens if the tunnel takes a narrow turn? You do not want long weapons in an enclosed space.

While fighting on the surface however thats another story.

While I agree that in 1 on 1 combat out in the open axes are not ideal for dwarves, they are not as bad as you may initially think, as they have the advantage of having a much lower center of gravity, which, in combination with a shield, can be very good for defensive combat. Skallgrim's video show this better than shad's I believe. Add to that that you are not going to be fighting 1 on 1 but on a formation, and I believe they could pull it off, specially against weaker enemies (and most races are weaker than dwarfs).

Still, for battles on open ground pikes or lances are probably better, but, since most of their battles are underground and against enemies like goblins and skavens that don't have a size advantage against them, it actually makes sense for them to use weapons they are familiar with rather that sligthly advantageous ones.

No, not at all. Using pikes on tunnels is a really terrible idea. You can't manage them effectively as they would hit the sides and top, you can't even march with them as you would have to carry them horizontally... you would have no maneuverability at all. That's why combat on close spaces (boats for example) was always done with short weapons.

Dude even real life historical men had a sidearm, even 2h sword wielding men had a 1h sword (samurais also) legios had 2 pila 1 dagger and in addition an extra utility knife, today they have bayonets and pistols for the same purposes, all this stuff aint for decoration

There is not one image of fantasy, the D&D skyrim fantasy is polluted with dragons mages and plotholes, but there is also fantasy where one dragon one demon and one wizard wrecks you
