How I did it (cheese) was to use Imrik (dragon), dragon, fire mage (dragon) and a noble (eagle) to engage their Phoenix to the far side of their formation until it was a bit rough, then chicken out and fly back to my formation at the edge of the map and lured all fliers with me.
The enemy dragon is slow so he arrives last and if you time it correct, you should kill/rout half of the phoenixes already till he arrives, then let Imrik engage and tank the dragon while your heroes tank the remaining fliers and your archers shoot them to death, one at a time.
Position your units so that the arrows mostly only hit the enemy and be careful with auto fire when you approach your formation first, first time I tried that my own troops shredded Imrik ^^
If you do that, most fliers are dead when the main force arrives and then it's easy.
You can try to bait the fliers to Benny Hill after some of your own flying units, but it doesn't always work; personally, I'd just try to ignore them and burn (heh) down the ground troops as fast as possible.
Arcane phoenixes and the dragon itself takes basically 10% of your physical damage if you have that active. So you're making the fight way more difficult than it should be.
Not Gordinar's. He comes in with a bunch of Fire Damage resistant units--Flamespyre Phoenixes, for example. You put up Sister spam against him, it's like using Sisters against Ironbreakers; you're in for a bad time.
BTW you can take it backward and use your dragon princes to tank the phoenixes and gordinar. Even a star dragon lose heavily against one single unbuffed unit of dragon princes (dragon princes don't even lose 5% of their models in large unit scale vs a star dragon), and in Imrik's army DP are far from unbuffed. I think they're at 90% fire resist.
So let them land and when they land suround them with dragon princes, they're as good as dead, focus on the rest of their army with your other troops.
