Maybe 1-2 units to rush into gaps in melee line?
They, like most animal creatures in game, are meant for flanking, hunting down weak targets like unguarded archers, weaker skirmishers or artillery, hunting down fleeing units.
I would not recommended dedicating them for straight up fights (since they will quickly suffer losses). But they can efficiently be used as a screening unit (Block/hold enemies in place for a couple of seconds while you move more suitable units into position).
War Lions are better for the role than Reaver Cav, although Reavers are certainly faster and can easily go long in a hurry to knock out artillery.
1 or 2 such units is all you actually need.
Whats nice is you get 3 units now out of 1 building.
White Lions, War Lions, and Great Eagle.
All of them are nice to have in an army but I ussually dont use them in large quantities. Maybe 4 units tops.
Edit,
Those 3 units all have armor penetration, all of them have a similar function sure but one can fly plus fear, another is for holding a wall or pulling a close flank/filling a hole, and the War lions can flank or chase routed units.
I'll use the White Lions simply because stand on wall, carries AP axe, and costs less than high tier options. Works out well when I have to have my main army have the expensive units.
That actually works with stuff like Rangers, plus White Lions...cause the unit formation is open rather than closed ranks.
