Stone trolls much better than river trolls?

I would have figured that the stone trolls would have had their speed nerf'd to account for their tankiness but no and with all the extra melee attack, armor, and weapon strength (slightly less melee defense?) they seem to be a all around better choice to the river trolls for the extra 33 gold per unit.

Slimy shanks right? Isn't that only when fighting in aquatic area or is that always on?

River trolls are stinky so they apply a debuff to all enemies near them. It's called overwhelming odor -6 melee attack.
