Don't love not having control over my characters, particularly spell casters. But I could see it being useful for a garrison army that's reinforcing.
That said, limit the number of cav/flying units you give it to control because it will just suicide rush them. Or anything it can cause a lot of friendly fire with for that matter.

That said im quite happy for having this option. Really hate having to micro big armies. Besides, the bad AI its not a big deal since my AI reinforcement armies usually compose of cheap basic infantry and ranged.
