AI controlling 2nd army not working?
I checked the box for the garrison army, but the AI doesn't actually control the army, I still have to place it and still have to control it.
This also applies when unticking "control large army"

I'm playing as high elves with a 14 unit army and a 12 unit garrison versus 2 lizardman stacks so it would've been nice if the ai controlled the meatshield garrison while I blast everything to pieces.

Is there somekind of limitation to how the AI control works?

You can only give control to armies that are reinforcing you during the battle, meaning they come from from outside of the map. Although garrison is marked as a reinforcing army before the battle starts during the battle it is already on the battlefield, so it is not actually a reinforcement, this is why checkbox does not work on it.

If you want to give garrison under AI control you need to position your main army outside of the settlement in settlement reinforcement range and somehow make the enemy attack your army (for example, by activating an ambush). Then garrison will come as actual reinforcement and you can put it under AI control. Or you can remove your army from the settlement, let enemy siege your settlement if it has walls, then attack enemy with your outside army. In this case settlement garrison will also join the battle as actual reinforcement.

in this game you control your armies even if they are reinforcing..

you can use a mod called "AI General II: Spectator Mode Advanced" to assign units for AI control.

Dont know about High elves and defense for settlement, but the AI has so far worked in my Orc campaign to handle the extra army I bring along (and for the whaaag army).

Glad I'm not the only one.

You apparently missed one of the biggest changes this patch.
You can now opt in to have the AI control any reinforcing armies.

Maybe they only play-tested it on the orcs and forgot about the other factions lol.

Yea, kinda sucks, seems a lot of smaller issues got introduced with the big patch.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Defensive battles appear to not allow it every time anymore. Be it by choice or bug is unknown.
