How do I get Mortal Empires DLC without installing WH1?
Like the title says: I’m aware you don’t need to install warhammer 1 to play Mortal, but every time I try to get the free dlc steam just instinctively tries to install it before it’ll let me ‘claim’ said content

Any ideas on how to get past this?

He already said that Mortal Empires works fine without installing WH1. Activating ME DLC is on Steam's side and requires only WH2. During the game each time you run it it checks if you have access to WH1 game in Steam, so refunding the game after activating ME campaign once won't work, you won't be able to play it.

He is having some trouble with activating DLCs from WH1 in WH2. There are actually two DLCs with the same name for each of them, one is for WH1 and one is for WH2 but it is hidden in Store. For example:
Norsca for WH1: https://steamdb.info/app/455040/
and
Norsca for WH2: https://steamdb.info/app/594603/

So when you activate WH1 DLC Steam checks if you also own WH2 and activates another DLC for you. Activation is completed before you install the WH1 game using Steam functionality, so it shouldn't be necessary to install the first game for any DLCs. Installation starts but it is not necessary.

You don't have a choice, If you want to play Mortal Empires you need to own both games.

Though you can uninstall game 1 after downloading it.

I own both games. To get mortal I didnt need to install 1; im asking how I can get the DLC for 1 without installing it.

(I’m running this on a decent enough laptop for the highest settings with no drops but the memory storage is absolute dog turds, only about 500gb)

It shouldn't be necessary but just install it once to activate it and uninstall it.

Maybe try to press install and instantly stop the installation process, that worked for me with the the norsca and chaos dlc when I bought them later on.

When installation starts DLC should already be claimed and activated. You can claim as many as you need and then stop and remove installation of WH1 from download manager.

You -have- to download both games once for ME to work, then you can uninstall game 1

Just for future reference, I didn’t have to install WH1 to play mortal empires. The Mortal Empires DLC for WH2 had a 750~ MB install and I was good to go on that front.

But thanks for the advice, looks like im just gonna have to bite the bullet And install WH1 if i want the dlc.

Before doing that just check one more time. Find DLC from WH1 in store, remember its name, click Download, close anything that appears (WH1 download, launcher, whatever), check list of DLCs for WH2. The WH2 copy of that DLC should already be in a list activated. There should be no download for WH2 or DLC itself.

We know, but it's just CA's way of confirming you have both by noticing you've booted up both at least once. That's probably the only reason you need to install WH1 and WH2 and at least run both of them one time. After that WH1 never becomes relevant anymore. So it's probably just for them to check you got both.
