Gates
The majority of sieges, were I am the attacker, the AI open the gates but I cant get through or break the gates. Its pretty frustrating if you are taking constant mortar bombardments and dont have any arty. Especially when it happens constantly.

Anyone else get this?

Yep.

My solution is flyers and ladders, if you hit the wall defenders with the flyers while your infantry is climbing the ladders it's over pretty quickly then the infantry can cap the gate or I can bring up my archers to slaughter whatever defender they have inside the city but not on the walls.

The gates do suck though, I just don't even mess with them anymore. Pretty close to putting in a no wall mod or something myself.

It's a bug they haven't been able to figure out since the game was released.

I do but i often have some monstrous infantry I may as well charge in.

I am sure your right. I have 1.5K hours and I feel like I never really saw this happen. Its getting more common. :cozyteddymoo:

Hmm when it happens is when you attack the gates with a lord/unit instead of the siege engine.

Your siege attcker also can get trapped on the other side. Yeah, it’s annoying, and one of many bugs.

You can still destroy the gates despite them being open. Instead of right-clicking on the open space, right-click on the hinges of the gate and your gate busters will continue destroying it. It is a bit of an inconvenience, but it won't stop your momentum if you know that the gate is still destructible (even by artillery). I've had the issue arise for me many times throughout my campaigns, but I just destroy the gates anyways and continue the steamrole

This has been a problem in Total War since Rome 1. The game knows that the attacker can't go through gates unless they're destroyed. The game also knows that the defender can move freely through their gates. So the defender can open the gates, but since they're not destroyed, the game does not allow the attacker to move through them. It's one of those issues that demonstrates the illusory nature of what's going on—the units aren't being stopped by the gates, but by a value that flags the gates as not having been destroyed.

I noticed this. But it doesn't seem as efficient as when it is closed. I had a giant doing this and getting shot by outriders on the other side. It was frustrating.

Makes sense. I seem to remember in an early total war that the gates could be manually locked by clicking on them.

Yeah it's annoying especially if it costs you a unit. Nowadays if I can't take the walls without towers (ie if I don't have artillery or don't have time to build towers) I'll at least try for a ram. It's only 1 turn, stops this issue, and if you're caught in a situation where you either attack on that turn or get sandwiched you kind of have to eat the loses anyway. Someone else mentioned if you position the camera right you can still at least continue hitting the gate when it's open.

Tl;Dr - Best solution is bring siege equipment to a siege, second best is reposition the camera and keep attacking it while you eat the loses. ☹️
