Lothern Sea Guards - Shields or No?
Do LSGs with shields get their shield bonuses while firing their bows? Or are their shields only used in melee?

'Internet' suggests that LSGs get shield bonuses always, but I'm wondering if that's misinformation - like how randos kept claiming Quarrellers w/ Great Weapons got the AP bonus on their crossbows, when it was really just their melee. Can anyone confirm this either way?

I believe that they do get their shield bonus when at range, they always seemed far more durable to me.

All units with shields always get those bonuses, regardless of whether they have those shields out on the screen.

OK, thanks. So the Shield version is worth the extra investment then?
I Like to think they are like pavise shields, that crossbowmen would carry and place down with a stand so they would have mobile placable cover.

It depends on army composition and formation your using, LSG actually replace spearmen and archers so to allow you to gain some more slots for other types of units, but you don't fully remove spearmen/archer units out of your army's because they also have high tier replacements, Phoenix Guard and sisters. LSG no shields are best used on flanks so a swap to shields is not a absolute priority since you wouldn't be running many, Far better to try and get other army components like cavalry or flyers before upgrading.

With shields are so much better, just skip the first LSG and wait for the shield version. Versatile enough to last you the whole game. Two on each flank with your Sisters in the center will keep cav away and shoot.

Since we're on the topic of shields, how do shields missile reduction compare to White Lions passive missile resistance? White Lions, even with resistance, seem to get shredded.

White Lions are a lot like Bronze Shield troops, basically they have protection but its the lowest kind. WL's have some other nice things like forest fighting and a large weapon.

If you can place WL's in the Woods....Say for an Ambush its well worth it, seeing as arrows have a tough time getting anyone in the woods.

Not exactly "on topic"; however, shields provide a chance to 'block' missiles, neglecting the dmg completely.
'Missile resistance', on the other hand, is a dmg modifier. That means that missiles will always deal dmg on hit, just reduced by the resistance value.

I knew that much, but thank you for explaining it anyway. I was just curious about the comparison. ^_^

Resistance also applies to artillery and explosive damage, whereas shields get ignored by both. It might not seem pertinent in the case of artillery, but it can be against weapons like organ guns or hellblasters.

dont they get like +8 melee defence? that alone makes them worth it

You can test it, do that and report
