I'd go with fire myself. So many undead now, it'll always be handy.
I´m already done with Tretch Craventail. He didn´t put up much of a fight, just removed his faction from the map :)
I´m not sure if I wanna mess with the Undead Factions yet. So far both Pirates and Tombkings are friendly to my faction.
What I need to do next is to take out Morathi for my Quest and get her capitol for my buff and then I´m going for Ulthuan I guess.
So I need magic that is effective against Dark Elves and High Elves units I suppose.
The difficulty is Very Hard so they will throw some stuff at me I think.
Front Line units haven´t been a problem for me so far, I´m having most trouble with ranged and mobile units.
Has it? Wasn´t aware of it. Shadows sounds interesting. Need to fight Chaos as well for sure. So AP would be nice.

Don't get me wrong, it's purely offensive school tho. Not for nerfing, but for buffing your units and killing only.
Usually leveled up Malekith, geared and on dragon casting Soulstealer or healing via other means+Fire Sorceress can solo entire armies by themselfes while rest of army watches.
I play on Very hard + Very hard.
Shadow - second best in my opinion, decent damage, targeted slow and damage and great nerf spells, but lacks the penetration, also some spells are quite price'y. A bit useless passive skill, but spells make up for it.
Dark third best, isn't so good, since you can't utilize the great usefulness of Soulstealer to heal your character that is fighting in meele(sorceresses aren't good for this). Great and cheap wind spell if you cast it properly. Not fan of Word of Pain. Spiteful Conjuration awsome. Blade Wind not so good, lacks penetration a lot for the cost. Doombolt is decent.
Death - 4-th best, great single target spell and targeted spell, but overall I find lackluster.
I find Beasts most useless of all lores. Nerfed to the ground, basically you get summon and no damaging/unreliable spells.
