If your going for a tanky front line I would suggest 4 dryads with at least 4 lothern sea guard (shields are better but not needed). Throw in 2 treemen and you should have a secure front line and spear units to defend any possible flank attacks. Go crazy with 9 Averlorn sisters from there.
Throw in some heals and your dryad/treemen front line should hold out against most early-mid game infantry/monsters.
But if you just want a front line, you're best options are probably sea guard cause they can also shoot. And they're comparatively very cheap.
Or if you have enough hero slots, handmaidens especially incindiary are the best. Mass sisters shoots down everything before it gets close, so one of the only major threats is artillery. And if you've got say 2-3 HMs in an army, you can snipe an artillery piece or 2, get them to run into you out of range of their artillery, then kill their army before artillery is even in range.
The problem with treemen is they get no tech or army buffs, except for Allarielles army where its still only army buffs and not super impressive. Even on wood elves, treekin are way tankier in a treeman lords army.
I was indeed thinking of treekin lol, thank you!
Lothern sea guard on their own will make a formidable frontline to begin with though. Using your woodland units at all is more of a roleplay choice.
The only thing that beats sisters after all the stupid buffs they get in campaign is artillery or other ranged that has received similarly stupid buffs, or floods of enough units that sisters can't kill them all (usually would be like tons of cav and dps infantry).
If you have the choice between both, sure get phoenix guard. But theres like 50 turns where you're growing from tier 3-5, and during those turns eh they're probably still a bit worse than sea guard but they're fine.
You really should have both infantry combined with treeman/treekin to create tanky line because its the advantage in composition Averlorn have HE's do not, he says masses of sisters, of how much that is exaclty? I don't know 10/12 units thats interesting but single models are probably the best way to go if your missile spamming without using blocks of infantry.
All treekin and treeman are for Averlorn at their respective tiers is to bolster your line and take pressure off your flyers you can use them at any point but they need infantry support.
