T-rex. T-rex as far as the eye can see. T-rex for days. T-rex is life, and life finds a way.

I'd say it's mostly about what you personally enjoy. But if I was to give my advice, I'd say you should have at least 4 units of cold one riders in what ever army you have. The one real weakness the Lizardmen have is real lack of speed. This makes wiping out units hard, due to the fact that you can't chase them down. I found that cold ones made playing the lizards much easier.

Early to mid game i usually have lord, 5 Saurus Shield&Spear, 5 Saurus Warriors Shields, 4 Skink Chamelons, 2 Bastiladons and 3 Cold One Riders this is my Army Roaster for Very Hard campaigns for both auto resolving and fighting they work quite well against more enemies untill the chaos comes or until your fighting DE, Orcs, HE or other Lizardmen if your fighting them just change a few units and you should be fine
For Chaos Armies you need:

At least:
1 Lord
1 Skink Priest
1 Skink Chief
4-6 Saurus with Shields
2-4 Temple Guards
2-4 Carnosaurs
2-4 Ancient Stegadons.
1-2 Solar Engine Bastiladons.
2-4 Horned Ones

You can mix and match as you see fit. If you are up against a large amount of Chaos Artillery the Terradons with Fire Bolas are quite efficient at taking them out.

Personally I use a:
1 Saurus Lord (Carnosaur mount)
1 Skink Priest & Skink Chief (2x Ancient Stegadons)
5-6 Saurus Warriors Shielded
4 Temple Guards
2 Carnosaurs
2 Ancient Stegadons
1-2 Solar Engine
2 Horned Ones.

Remember to position your Solar Engines on the flank so that when they shoot they will fire down the enemy line and do tons of damage.
You need to babysit the Horned Ones, but they are amazing for cycle charging (use J to take them out of the fight easily)

Blessing of Quetzl is a really strong Blessing for this setup. You could also get the one to reduce Dino upkeep, both are viable.

+ As many Skink Priests on Stegadons as you can be bothered to get
+ 5x Temple Guard if available, Saurus Warriors otherwise
+ 5x of either Bastilodon with Lasers or Stegadons; preferably the latter; these help a lot in sieges & on occasion allow you to out-shoot the High Elves :P
+ 2 Carnosaurs
+ 1 Skink Chief for the embed replenishment,
+ 1 Saurus Scar-Veteran, why not
+ Fill the rest up with Stegadons

Nah: Triceratops (Stegadon) is a much better call as you face infantry hordes far more often than you do large hodes.

Saurus w/ Spears are not really worth it as they're quite bad at dealing with infantry, and Saurus normal are perfectly good at dealing with monsters or cav anyway. While Saurus take high damage on the initial charge, they'll be able to murder it easily

Chameleon Skinks are not worth the building: that implies you're at T3 which means you can get Feral Stegadons which means you should be spamming Feral Stegadons instead.

Cold One Riders are basically just a bad Stegadon :p The advantage of Cold Ones is that they're speedy and hence can run around to muck up archers or siege. However, Stegadons have the mass to simply ignore infantry (even good infantry), outrun the infantry, and start stuffing up their archers: and will do a ton of damage as they do so!

Why no Scar Veteran or Skink Chief? The latter's replenishment bonus is amazing, and the former's melee monstrosity is absurd since you as the player can actually give items.

Given you have access to lategame units why are you using Saurus w/Shields? Why not Temple Guard, which will a) skewer any monsters that come your way but also b) their armor-piercing means they do a lot better in melee against other infantry?

Ancient Stegadons are a really really bad idea: Stegadons are much better, for their range, recruit time, and price. If you're a little short on cash just throw Feral Stegadons instead: the rampage doesn't matter at all, you want these guys in melee.

Solar Engines are quite a good call; their range firepower is quite good and Blinded is a great debuff.

Horned Ones are risky: you'll probably lose a cav fight and Chaos does get some good cav. But they are very good at smacking Hellcannons which can otherwise obliterate your Saurus. My strategy for murdering Hellcannons is usually just to send one Stegadon over their infantry onto the Hellcannon.

Also, Horned Ones require not only the cav building but the T4 smith.... Stegadons just require the T4 beast building and that's it :P

Personally I use a:
1 Saurus Lord (Carnosaur mount)
1 Skink Priest & Skink Chief (2x Ancient Stegadons)
5-6 Saurus Warriors Shielded
4 Temple Guards
2 Carnosaurs
2 Ancient Stegadons
1-2 Solar Engine
2 Horned Ones.
I find heroes to be better on normal Stegadons, not Ancient: the range is much more handy as I don't want those heroes in melee and in addition it means you can smack walls.

Again, why Saurus Warriors not Temple Guard, why Ancient Stegadons?

Also, why a Saurus lord and not a Slann?

TL;DR Moaaaaaar Stegadons: even if only the Feral variant they're cheap and absurdly good

Ridiculous amount of options. The end game should be mostly big dinos however.

I build around 2-3 unit types based kn the red line and have variety armies.

Carnesaurs and cold ones
Stegadon artillary with saurus
Skinks and cold ones.
Skinks and saurus
Carnesaurs and stegadons

A super balanced army is usually what i do with maz:

Maz

My anvil:
4 temple guard (blessed)

To bait the fight to me and anti-artillary:
4 stegadons (blessed)

Specialty skirm:
1 chameleon skink (blessed)
1 fire teradon (blessed)

To kill arty/ranged and then hammer:
1 feral carnesaur (blessed)
2 horned ones (blessed)
1 cold one spears (blessed)

The open slots are for mixed heroes:
Usually by late game have plenty of heroes in advance of my army doing hero actions. I move them in and out for fun and if needed (usually not needed).

Skink chiefs on ancient steg (mostly for replenishment buff) but they also protect my flanks very well and street sweep their skirmishers.

Saurus vets on carnesaurs to hunt their large.

Priest on teradons to be mana batteries mostly. Sometimes drop a nice chain lightning or join the nlessed stegs in anti-artillary or single model sniping with fireballs. (Priests also increase loot drop chance which is needed for my super unbalanced army)

Super unbalanced army:
Lord on carnesaur
16 heroes on carnesaurs
3x bastilladons with reveiv crystals.

Not only is a an army with 20 models unique, fun, and OP in battles but this is my anti chaos army since it can settle razed settlements and suffer 0 attrition when doing so. Quite overpowered on the campaign map.
Super unbalanced army:
Lord on carnesaur
16 heroes on carnesaurs
3x bastilladons with reveiv crystals.
that does tend to be super unbalanced :P

Bonus points: stack Pompous for a lovely -4 leadership for enemy units per hero, which, with enough patience and money, you can make armies insta-rout :P

Saurii. Then saurii with shields. Then do the rite that gives you an army.

Make do with whatever you get (lots of dinosaurs).

By the time you'll have the money to worry about unit comp, you'd already conquered 30 settlements.
