Take hydra when fighting infantry heavy armies
Take kharabydiss when fighting large heavy armies
When in doubt take both
Kharybdiss is hyper specialized for large killing. It can do some damage to infantry, and does have the additional benefit of an extra passive LD debuff(giving it 3 bits of leadership smashing, roar, fear and terror), but lack of regen or breath makes it mediocre vs mobs.
Generally, vs AI I find the kharybdiss to not be worth it since shooting can do its job of large killing just as well and regen is a nice boon on the hydra. No matter which one you pick though, make sure to deploy them in the middle of your infantry formations so they dont get surrounded, the two units have atrocious MD and armor, so they tend to fall apart to any infantry, especially AL infantry, even non-AP versions.
1) the potential for easier terror routing. If you have a death caster, you can drop doom and darkness in an area, dropping enemy leadership by 16, add a further -8 from kharybdiss, fear penalty and terror, and on lower difficulties you can cause a near instant rout in an area vs some factions. With rear charges and missile damage you can possibly even pull it off on higher difficulties or vs more resilient factions like dwarves or other elves.
2)Poison debuffs enemy damage, which means that while not doing that great vs infantry perhaps, a kharybdiss supporting its troops can apply poison to the enemy infantry, making them less effective vs your own infantry.
I still think the hydra is generally better vs AI(not really a fan of either unit in MP) but I think those are some things worth keeping in mind.
In multiplayer the Kharibdyss has a niche role of both fear and anti large, which is useful against low morale armies(Skaven, Greenskins, etc). For anything else, either single or multiplayer the hydra is simply better.
