The Marauder chain(which forms part chaos basic T1-T3) can be prolonged by transitioning into magic chain, this allows your army composition to be fast and pretty nasty, essentially better at being aggressive(In warhammer three we need more units to have synergy with this chain), and this is what chaos is all about, the problem with the army composition(forsaken + spawn) is its scaling problems especially on higher difficulties. Its compounded by the fact you also need to beeline for cavalry or monsters. Sorcerers are also vital at keeping this army composition going shadows is a excellent addition with a Melee LL/ chaos lord leading an army.
The Marauder chain can also be transitioned out of fairly early and into the worship chain, here you will get a frontline that hits like a truck but its slower, the benefits are the chain does not need other chains to augment it, it scales really well compared to the marauder + magic chain. Your army will be slower but its inpart able to shrug off missile fire with silver shields, this army comp is best paired with forges chain, marauder horsemen also still make sense to use moreso then in the above combination until you get access to dragon ogres.
Chaos trolls and Giants are just a waste of time building. Not when you have Chaos spawn/Champions and eventually Shaggoths. Having saying that trolls would have far better synergy with worship chain.
So, use those. The challenge is they dont have good skirmish units. Chaos taught me the value of skirmishing as I thought rolling the AI would be easy with just straight heavy infantry. I was not always right. Lesson learned.
Unless you go straight for Bretonnia at the start, though, you probably won't be fighting them much until they're spamming Grail Knights. In which case Chosen with halberds will slaughter them.
