Skink Chiefs: Stegadon or Ancient Stegadon?
I don't play Lizardmen a lot, but currently playing a Hexoatl campaign. Curious what the consensus is on Skink Chief mounts. Are they generally more effective on the regular stegadon with the ballista, or on the ancient stegadon with the poison blowpipes?

Obviously ballista is the only artillery range option, but ancient stegadon has more HP and armor, just not sure which way to go.

Skink Priests obviously get the Engine of the Gods because it's too cool to pass up.

I go with ancient stegodons. They aren't that great as standalone units, but they are significantly better as hero mounts. Typically you want your melee heroes wading into the fight, not hanging back and sniping with a ballista.

They are both good though, you really can't choose wrong. Just make sure your Saurus Veterans get a Carnosaur ASAP.

You don't really want your stegodons hanging back and sniping either.

I mean, it's useful as a way to make the enemy come to you... I tend to prefer forcing them to engage my carefully constructed formation rather than having to engage theirs. Though late late game the whole army is of course stegadons and dread saurians and formations kind of stop mattering.

Right, which is why I endorse Ancient Stegodons. They are just flat out better in melee.

As units they aren't really worth it though. Regular Stegodons are fine for recruiting. But as hero mounts I like the Ancient ones.
I'd go with the stegadon if I were you since the chief has many ranged skills you can opt into that get wasted in ancient stegadons. Just plop them in front of your army so they shoot the important stuff coming in or force the enemy to charge you by shooting at them at range, then charge them in supported by your infantry (if you have any). Not to mention they don't need to waddle after units that run away because of their range. Overall a more versatile choice in my opinion. Same goes for the skink priests, the engine of the gods is pretty underwhelming for the flexibility you sacrifice.

Both in melee will get tons of kills. So if it can kill in ranged and melee, why not

Simply make sure you hit the melee, not the muffin, button at battle start
