Wood elves for beginner
In Your opinion who is easier and overall better pick for first play as wood elves? Durthu seems extremely powerful by himself, but I think playing with elves archers can be more fun than ents etc. What's your opinion on WE lords for ME ?

Both factions have also something like "offices" (like Empire), which provide bonuses to the lords. Orion can bestow those only to elven lords, while Durthu can do that only to treeman ancients. I'd say that this is actually the most impactfull difference between those. Regarding units, you can spend amber anyway and you get quite a lot of it once you expand, so you can field archer heavy armies with Durthu the same way as tee kin hevy armies with Orion in the long run.

I'd say that Durthu is slightly easier to start with because he is arguably the single strongest LL in the game. He will defeat about anyone, except probabaly Tyrion, in a 1v1 engagement and can tank and defeat multiple top tier units at once without issue even without specific gear. Sure, he is slow, but he is a juggernaut in a fight and a mage to boot. Orion is good, but he is "just" high tier overall.

It's a matter of preference though... If you want to have more WOOD, go Durthu, if you want to go more ELVES go Orion. In the end you play wood elves though, so it's just choosing your emphasis.

durthus doom stack is very simple, easy to control and very efficient (looks something like 2 dragons, 7 branchwraiths, 10 treemen and durthu himself). campaign start (~20-30 turns) is somewhat hard since you can't hire much. endgame durthu himself can solo entire armies. big minus is that you'll have to play a lot of battles manually because autoresolve hates single model units (which entire durthus army consists of).

orion requires more micro, but his stack is the most potent ranged stack in the game (or at least one of). his big minus is that he dies every once in a while (he's an embodiment of an elven god and every winter that god goes to sleep to awake in the spring) and you need to have a lord in rotation that would pick up the slack.

i prefer durthu simply because i don't want the hassle of a randomly dying lord.

Offices do not discriminate on lord type for both of the elf factions. Might be wrong if they changed it from the first game, but I had no issue assigning confederated treeman ancients to an office when playing as Orion.

I believe Angvarin might be talking about a SFO WE campaign, where Orion does have to do the rebirth thing.

WE is my favorite faction. It all boils down to whether you prefer ranged or melee play style. Using archers as artillery is fun and using trees to form an impenetrable front line is fun too. That being said, I think Durthu is a bit easier to play only because of the tankiness.

oh... are you telling me it's not a vanilla feature?
to be honest i was done with vanilla somewhere around 100-150 hrs, so it is very much might be a mod thing. sorry for the wrong info if that's the case :bonehead:

Yes. SFO feature.

It was in the first game though. I played Argwylon and could give the offices only to treeman ancients.

It was in both. Yes. Maybe at the beginning of game 1 it was buggy, I don't remember. But Elves for the Elven council, Woodboys for the campfire.

I distinctly remember assigning Durthu to an office after I confederated him. Maybe it was early on just after the wood elves were given a patch adjustment in the first game.

Durthu is a LL. It might be because of this. Basically, he doesn't "count" as an ancient treeman.

Orion can assign either because he is the synthesis of Elves and the Forest.

Durthu can only assign Treemen because he's a psychotic hate-plant who is only using the Elves to help him destroy the outside world. I like to think of it as a tiny nerf to account for the fact that he is a much, much stronger LL than Orion.

Thx for help guys. I picked Durthu because he's such a powerful lord.
