Trouble with Thorgrim Grudgebearers Axe of grimnir Shaman Fight
During the fight it says i must route or kill 4 shamans right? The quest said i needed t face a pitifult amount of orcs but i get severely ambushed right at the start. Completely unprepared all i had was about 6 warriors, 8 quarrelers, 3 grudgethrowers and my starting hammerers. They were all deep into silver rank earned entirely through combat alone besides maybe a couple quarreler squads.

The first two waves inflicted fairly moderate damage but the way orcs constantly retreat and come back ensured i was never truly finished with any of them by the time the third wave hit. 4 archers started peppering me and 2 black orks crashed through my flank like it wasnt even there. Goblin artillery hit my hammers early and they werent prepared to deal with the threat. Also a bit before the third wave hit an ork warboss got into my quarrelers and was pretty much running around uncontested.

Thorgrim this entire time was chasing down the 4 shamans because the objective said to do so. I routed all 4 shamans with almost 0 hp but the objective never seemed to update. Battle came down to a heavily damaged thorgrim, 2 squads of black orks and 3 goblin archers. managed to kill one black ork and wound the other but the archers were too much.

So i guess what im asking is does the objective even matter or do i just need to kill everything like every other battle.

Why would you take 19 units into a quest battle?

What was the balance bar looking like before you started the battle? On the teleport screen you can see a preliminary balance bar.

believe it also warns you that reinforcements would be coming for the orcs. Anytime you see that you can throw out the window the idea that you have a massive advantage
So many of the quest battles hit you with reinforcements that you'd have no way of being able to anticipate without having played it prior - often the reinforcements include things like dragons or multiple giants too (looking at you, Grombrindal) from awkward positions. I strongly advise against going siege for the Dwarf quest battles as a result, a doomstack of hammerers+longbeards is usually what you want since everything becomes a clusterfudge so quickly.

thanks i appreciate the advice.
what was the point of the 4 shamans objective? Was completing that supposed to win the fight?
In theory yes, but in practice it's just a standard rout-em-up.

I remember this fight. A bit frustrating but yeah, you need to kill or shatter the shaman. If they simply rout, you’ll need to deal with them a second time. Or third or fourth time.

I would recommend getting at least a rune Smith, an engineer for your grudge throwers, and maybe a thane to help with hero kills. Keep your heroes near your troops and also use your heroes to charge enemy infantry (not black orcs). That’ll clump them up and allow archers and artillery to blast em easily. Use thunderers and slayers/miners to try and deal with black orcs. Or just lots of artillery and quarrelers.

The orc cavalry are annoying, but focused fire in a couple volleys should melt them before they reach you lines.
