Training useless?
So, is training skill (for example the empire captain) useless? I mean, u get a low amount of xp per turn, what do u think?

No kills for my lodestone corpse cart yet a combination of Vlad's faction ability and the embedded wight king gets him to rank 5.

It's free unit XP and completely risk-free. It's not like players are so hard up for points they can't devote the three required to max out the benefit.

I guess it all depends on how you play and what you want to use the character for - but personally yes I find the skill to be hot garbage - I never get it.

Training even when leveled up works very slowly. I would not call it the first best way of getting chevrons. You get maybe 50 XP per turn and individual units need more than thousand each to level up. That said, it is a nice extra to have for its points. If you multiply that 50 points with the number of units in the stack you get 1000 free XP per turn, which sounds a bit better and it costs you no gold. So why not?

Well with this numbers, it is not bad at all. But if i remember correctly, on warhammer 1 it was way better, something like 150 a turn right?

it's a great skill for all those armies that you leave behind to defend your territories since they won't see much action.

I vaguely recall so. Back then Heroes had a blue skill tree, just like Lords and Training was far along the tree in those days. Now you can pick and choose of course. I never wanted to put that many skill points in there. It would take 8 skill points to level up a skill in the second part and that is way too much for Training! Better to spend 3 skill points for 50 or so XP. (My Gunnery Wight is doling out 55 per turn right now.)

It's free real-estate.

I understood that reference.

The real problem is how easy after a while it is to stack chevrons bonuses when recruiting. Why bothering to take the slow path of upgrading your current troops when you can recruit troops that have silver or even gold chevrons right from the start?

It's not that Training is useless, but more that there is something in game that is easier and 10 times more efficient than training is.
So as a result, spending points in training feels heavily suboptimal. It's not bad per se. Just, the alternative is far too good to ignore it.

Yeah this is another thing. I was thinking on stacking training, like 4 or 5 heroes with training skill upgraded in a single army, but u need always turns to complete this.

Yeah I wish it was otherwise, that no matter what your regular troops never have more than 1 or 2 chevrons when recruited

You got Lord traits, Commandments, resource buildings, landmarks and buildings, events and mission rewards, followers and maybe something I forgot. They typically give out chevrons at recruitment. Stacking these is a heck of a lot better than Training, but its not an either/or question. On some factions it can be hard to get those + X levels recruitment bonuses. Chaos factions come to mind. Those kind of factions can benefit from Training but we should not really make it out to be the only thing at play. Like I said, use all advantages avaiable, even small ones.

My grimgor campaign lasted 450 turns.......
Ashantai Nov 23, 2018 @ 12:47pm
I made a mod to increase it. As it is at level 3 it takes ~280 turns to get a unit from rank 1 to 9.

So yeah in vanilla it's not too useful unless combined with other things like Vlad's skill or pirate XP gain from ship buildings.

This conversation takes me back to something I noticed earlier in my Bret campaign. Having max chivalry gives unit XP per turn. But at max chivalry you can complete the campaign objective. So 10/10 benefit there.
