Cav speed confusion
I have played over a 1000 hours now and I still don't understand why the enemy cav is always faster than they should be.
Example outriders, when I play against outriders and try catching them with slower cav I have to surround them to catch them, but when I play outriders, then enemy cav with 20 points less speed can easily catch me.
Can someone explain this to me please.

Are you waiting till the enemy is on top of you? It takes a moment to reach top speed and in that time 20 speed doesn't mean much.

No, I'm doing pretty much the same the AI does, shoot once then run away, but somehow when I run away I can't get any distance from the enemy cav, right before I made this post I had a fight where I ran away over half of the map but somehow the slower cav was a little bit fast and caught me. This isn't the first time something like this happened.
I also had similar experiences with other units, not only cav, for example chameleon skinks, everytime I try to get them with cav or chariots they run away and give me poison wich slows my unitrs down so much that I can't catch them for a very long time, everytime I try something like that with chameleon skinks I get caught after 1 - 2 salvos.
I don't know why but it sometimes feels as if the enemies just get a speed boost for some reason.

Are your troops tired? tired troops slow down but the unit cards don't show it.

Do higher difficulty settings give a boost to the AI unit stats in battle?

they do but not to speed

There is definitely something more at play here. The AI does not get bonues to speed.

If you are waiting for them to get in charge range before moving there is a rush of speed involved with the final charge animations. They will maintain that until you get out of charge range or until they hit you I think. So it can be really rough to break off if you wait to late. This may not be what you are encountering but its the only thing I can think of.

This does sound like the most likely explanation, until now I thought that charge is only a very short distance, but if this is the situation then that means they can go into charge animation when they're still around 80 distance away.
I wish my cav would do that consistently, I'm lucky if they decide to use their charge animation instead of theire normal running animation, even if their at full running speed on flat ground.

There also several effects that slow units, for example poison (and its relatively easy to get poison ranged units for most faction as a example).

If you queue up movement commands or do the SHIFT+Mouse draw for movement in a weird formation with two units or more, I have observed units to slow down a bit.

That I also have seen, if you do it with 2 or more units the game likes to create really wonky paths.

In my outrider example it was against chaos, outriders had 84 speed and the chaos knights had 66.

Yeah, its very weird.
Unless your Outriders are slowing down while shooting, may be that "Fire Whilst moving" has a tiny debuff on speed.

Edit: You can also change the Fatigue and Rank levels by clicking on them in the above link.

From looking in the tables (battle_entities), the Chaos Knights enters charge speed of 107 when they get within 40m of the target. Within 35m they enter charge pose.

They were not tired, it was the beginning of the fight, could be that the distance was a little wonky because it was on a slope, so they got their charge boost faster than normal?
And thanks for the link to the comparison.
