This is exactly correct, but don't give up!
One of the things that I feel that many players enjoy about this series is how dramatically different many of the factions can feel and for me personally I really like adapting a style that suits me while still playing to the strengths of the faction that I chose.
But, if you want, you can kinda emulate the playstyle with empire and lizardmen.
Both come relatively close, provided you build the army right.
With empire, you basically have a similar playstyle with a heavy focus on ranged and artillery, but you sacrifice that Dwarven resilience for mobility and magic.
With lizards, you have a powerful Frontline, lack range on your missile and artillery units, but get access to monsters, cavalry and magic.
Well, you also have the Stegodon, which is kinda similar to a beefed up bolt thrower.
Could also try High Elves. They have a tough infantry line, though one far more vulnerable to missile fire than Dwarfs, and the best archers in the game (assuming you have the Queen and the Crone DLC).
Empire and High Elves are the next logical choice for ranged armies that feature a good front line of infantry and hero's.
OF course these two groups offer a good variety of options that can allow you to move away from static ranged firing lines...With cavalry/chariots, monsters, hero's....etc...
There is also the matter of now having access to winds of magic.

Trouble is that there melee are often just trash compared to Dwarf Warriors and Long Beards. The weapons teams are amazing though.
Dark Elves...
Much of the initial release armies were almost totally focused on using DarkSpears and DarkShards, and maybe a few reaper bolt throwers...Very static based army play...
Thing is that DarkSpears are trash compared to anything but the Skaven front line.
Again...All of them feature cavalry/fast movers, monster selection, and other options...Certianly WOM.
For the most part...I'd suggest getting familiar with cavalry so your playstyle and awareness of how to play can grow.
