some units are able to detect hidden units over a great distance for example lizardmen with predatory senses.
i used them in my campaign just now and they work just fine for me.
you can move behind the enemy no problem. shades also got vanguard deployment going. depending on the battelfield there should be two areas for vanguard in the corners of the map on your opponents side.
Against AI anyway. Campaign-wise Shades are single best unit ever (since unlike dragons/etc you can actually use them for most of the campaign).
1. Keep distance, about the range of typical archer, 125
2. Turn off fire at will.
