How to tell if a city has walls (in battle) or not.
Started a beastmen campaign and it seems important as i dont want to spend too long out in the open else armies come for my horns.
Also cities without a seige timer i want to use for my lesser lords to attack so they can lvl up while the big kids attack big kid places. (get it... kid?)

So yea, seems like wether or not a city has the building walls (whatever name it takes) it doesnt actually affect wether or not the city will need a seige. So do i just have to memorize them or is there a way to tell?

If you click on a settlement it'll bring up the province information, and to the top left of what buildings are in each settlement, any that have full battle-map walls will have a little picture of a green castle (you may need to click onto the garrison information for that to show, don't remember off the top of my head). That's the easiest way to find out if they require a siege or not, but there are also some general rules which are good to remember -

Every province capital will have walls by default (except for Norscan provinces which don't have walls at all, even with upgrades), whether or not they build extra defensive upgrades for a greater garrison.

Minor settlements will only have walls if they build the full defensive upgrades - except again for Norsca, but also Bretonnia - every Bretonnian faction only needs to get their minor settlements to third tier and then they automatically get walls.

Oh yeah, and as Matayus said - there are the Empire Forts and Ulthuan Gates which are all automatic sieges, but you can't build any equipment to tackle them.

Gates of Ulthuan and forts of the empire are walled buildings that you can't build siege engines for. All other walled settlements have a "wall" as a name scroll. As in you can see it around the city name of there are walls or not.

XD Imagine what a wood elf wall would be like. Smokey the bear walking around telling elves to not play with fire magic.

The settlement tag will have battlements instead of a plain rectangle.

Btw, if you don't like siege battles there's a mod that removes them from settlements ( not capitols tho ).
The endless sieges were driving me insane and ruining my fun, sieges in this game just aren't very good.

I like seiges, and ill admit i like TW:WH seiges... but compared to ANY of the previous total wars... i mean... i feel like this one has the worst seiges of any REAL strategy game ive ever played. heck the dev for medieval kingdom wars came up with some amazing seiges and thats a team of like ten guys!!

I dunno, i just wish they would take allot of the mods thats ol whats his name made and be like "so we payed him five K so here's all ur seige maps that are now officially part of le game"

I'm actually impressed that after all this time you apparently still didn't notice.

I always fear that, with my 1k+ hrs, there is a tiny little but crucial mechanic that I still missed...

We all are. I will always remember not reading the spell "manual" and only ever noticing it by accident of "clicking three times to deactivate a spell seems odd instead of two." and a tooltip on how to overcast in game 1.

lols, before i even got into warhammer i almost didnt buy it. I came from Empire and Napoleon.
My first 20+ hours as empire was all "WTF why are my lines breaking? Theyre literally just edgy barbarians.

I soon found out that it played a LOT more like ME:TW than Empire XD
