As a hero, they would still be meh (same reason).
But It's free. So it's okay I guess. Still I hope they make it more interesting somehow. It's so bland and by the time they come back you wouldn't even want to hire them again. In it's current state it's rather depressing.
For a perfect verdict I'm a hard one to please -
Gotrek shouldn't have been a lord in my view. He'd hang around as long as there's beer, coin and something formidable to fight.
The 2 should have everything other heroes get and more, like interactive inventories and skill trees and ability to assassinate on the map, even Lords as likely targets in their case. They could just pre-slot and lock the lore items and limit the body armor to belts or tats/warpaint in Gotreks case.
Remember those cool little agent movies we used to get in the original total war games? CA missed a huge opportunity here. It could have been almost like a player driven Gotrek and Felix comic series.
Cause CA/Sega gathers info on our accounts with it (you know, when you login into your steam through Total War access). Its a easy way to know how their(and maybe even other) games are selling.
They're a mixed bag. The implementation is something of a mess and I really can't imagine they're going to stay as they are. I don't think there's one person who's fully positive on how they work, and they're popular characters so a re-work is bound to happen down the line.
I did an Empire campaign where they showed up twice. Fair's, fair, even just having the two of them following along another army was enough to help me win some battles that would have been much tighter. Gotrek racked up just over 900 kills alone in a Fort battle against Marienberg when the dopes stacked their last two armies there with a level 5 garrison and wouldn't bloomin' leave. He really does fight how you pretty much want him to, especially with Felix in tow.
That said, I would still ultimately prefer a lower powered G+F that you can build up across a campaign into his later god-like levels with a skill tree/gear etc. It's hard doing it in a way that doesn't split them up, but I honestly thought they'd make the model a Hero and have them combined Skarsnik and Gobbla style, albeit still able to climb ladders.
They're a bit derp for now but I'm certain they'll get a change at some point so not too worried about it, in the meantime they're just an odd bonus if they show up.
Also Brian Blessed is a win.
I mean they have some incredibly OP buffs by default between Gotrek and Felix.
You're not really supposed to make an army with them, rather use them to reinforce your other armies and just enjoy having some really powerful heroes join in.
At the cost of +15% upkeep for all other armies? No freaking way. If they were meant to be used as reinforcing heroes, whats the point of making gotrek a general then?
