Sm are good vrs infantry but melt vrs ranged and cav so you need to tie up ranged and cav before sending them in.
Dragon princes very strong and anti large so beat all new world cav and smash infantry to bits specially whrn your lord is built around them. They are pretty beefy too so last ages in melee.
Dragons are kinda squishy so never send them solo. When supported they do a lot if cleave and their breath attacks got buffed so are insane and always hit now.
Pgs are meh and not needed at all they are slow dps and only good vrs large but you already cover it with other units.
Phoenix are crap too their dps is terrible but they are kinda tanky 1v1 good for tying up ranged units but expensive for what they do and the blue ones aura is tiny so useless...
Ranged reavers viable all game can kite for fun but also smash weaker infantry on charge. Them alone can carry you until end game they are like brets yeoman but just better in everyway bar maybe speed.
What I have found to be a pretty good one is Shadow Warriors / Shadow Walkers, Lothern Sea Guard and Eagle Claws. You will be able to lay down lots and I mean lots of arrows while having a solid anvil to fight in melee.
For this comp I used
Alith Anar
Shadow Walkers x 3
Shadow Warriors x 5
The Grey
Lothern Sea Guard x 6
Eagle Claws x 4
The trick is to put you Sea Guard and the Eagle Claws at the extreme end of the battlefield, preferablly in a spot where you can reduce flanking while the Shadow Walkers and Warriors do most of the work, whittling down the enemy numbers. The Shadow Warriors and Walkers can also be replaced with Bow Reavers for an even more mobile force.
But I will take a stab at it.
1 Lord mounted on Dragon
1 Noble, with eagle
4 Spearmen, 1 of them being the ROR unit for the 12% damage aura resist
2 Lothern Seaguard
1 Maiden Archers (for aura)
3 Archers can be Loth
2 Bolt Throwers
2 Phoenix Guard
2 Hoeth Swordmasters
2 Dragon Princes
This gives you a solid front line that is going to be used as a meatshield to pin the AI front line in place. Spearmen are not something you will even cry over losing but the other thing is these are really durable. Phoenix are an upgraded version sure but lack shields so these can be held just behind the spearwall.
Your Swordmasters you can just pile them on after the front line collides with yours.
There is still a lot of Archers in the army and on top of that likely these are all Loth Seaguard units all fine for taking out large monsters, especailly flyers.
If your playing as Anar Alith swap some out for Shadow Walkers! You want their poisen debuff.
The Bolt Throwers, these are there for a ton of reasons which are all nice, thing is these are decent for selectively removing a specific heavily armored ground target that you dont want to collide with your front line.
I tossed in the Dragon Princes so that you could have some Hammer an Anvil going on. Pulling them away after the collision is important or you will lose them...They are charge centric unit.
Lord on Dragon...Eh maybe you get bored of micro the charges of the cavalry and want to do it with your Lord instead.
Hero Unit choice well he's good for making charges as well...Flying hammer, use him against stuff colliding with your line. He can also be used to tie up non-anti large units...Kill off annoying archers...Kill off Hero's, really good for that.
But I'd probably say my favourite build is a dozen phoenix guard, five bolt throwers, couple of heroes, and a 60 influence lord to buff the PG. PG are basically anti-everything in melee, so as long as you back them up with some range you can't really go wrong.

The dragons can take on anything, except elite anti-large and anti-large cavalry. This is where the phoenix guards come in.
lord
1-2 agent
4 spearmen
3 white lions
2 light archers
3 LSG
3 eagles
2 reavers, silvers melee or missile cavalry.
1 eagle claw(can be dropped for agent)
follow up would go:
lord
1-2 agent
4 phoenixguard
3 swordmasters
2 sisters
3 LSG
2 dragon princes
3 dragons or phoenix or combination
1 eagle claw(can be dropped for agent)
