All in all, in my opinion they're one of the easier factions to play in SP. Start can be a bit rough, you need to be creative. Don't be afraid to raze for 8-9k in the early game is my advice. Early game you need to be a bit aggressive.
Regarding the campaign however... I just find it really difficult to know what I'm supposed to do. The amber requirement on units needs to go as far as mortal empires is concerned as it just hampers you compared to other races.
I tend to try and play diplomatically with the exception of the "evil" races, they get smashed. I tend to find however it gets very boring quite quickly. Diplomacy isn't easy and not always useful. I feel the other factions benefit a lot more from alliances than the wood elves.
On the flipside, if you run around killing everything you'll eventually be unable to defend yourself which can result in someone charging to your oak of ages and smashing it before you can react.
It's a difficult one to know for sure... I'll keep an eye here for feedback as in also interested.
Really, I like seeing the whole map becoming a huge forest ^^
Probably the easiest campaign in the game, but unfortunately also stupidly boring after just a couple dozen turns as you become horribly OP.
What if I confederate?
You can field the same units, but because some cost amber, there is a focus on different types of armies (elves or forest spirits).
And how do you replenish without running back
You can take any settlement, and there is a building that gives replenishment.
Take it, build it, replenish your stack(s). Afterwards, if you lose it, it's not a big deal, you can always come back later for the amber (and to deny the location to the enemy).
Amber defines your campaign and you should basically never waste it on units (unless you're playing after completing ultimate campaign victory). So the upshot is that late game armies in Argwylon campaigns are completely different to late game armies in Wood Elf campaigns. Hence replayability.
