So what do Wood Elves actually do?
You just sit around in your woods, making allies with the other Wood Elf clans, because you can't defeat them. Maybe raze a settlement or two? Then contemplate whether it's worth it or not to keep an outpost protected or try to expand elsewhere, because it's not really self sustainable.

That's all fine and it fits the lore, but am I supposed to just move around in this forest all day?

Build up Doomstack of Waywatchers, go 1v1 any settlement. Raze, collect 120k gold, repeat until all the world is painted green. Buff your ranged army with the outpost buff. I saw a YT video of a guy once who had Waywatchers with 120 missile damage due to Orion/outposts/item buffs.

All in all, in my opinion they're one of the easier factions to play in SP. Start can be a bit rough, you need to be creative. Don't be afraid to raze for 8-9k in the early game is my advice. Early game you need to be a bit aggressive.

I find them a bit of a mind boggler. I love wood elves and even collected them on tabletop when I was a kid.

Regarding the campaign however... I just find it really difficult to know what I'm supposed to do. The amber requirement on units needs to go as far as mortal empires is concerned as it just hampers you compared to other races.

I tend to try and play diplomatically with the exception of the "evil" races, they get smashed. I tend to find however it gets very boring quite quickly. Diplomacy isn't easy and not always useful. I feel the other factions benefit a lot more from alliances than the wood elves.

On the flipside, if you run around killing everything you'll eventually be unable to defend yourself which can result in someone charging to your oak of ages and smashing it before you can react.

It's a difficult one to know for sure... I'll keep an eye here for feedback as in also interested.

What to do? Reforest the world. The green tide, only ecologically. FOR THE TREES!

Really, I like seeing the whole map becoming a huge forest ^^

Amber adds replayability as it means you field completely different armies with orion and durthu. It's such a ridiculously easy campaign anyway it hardly needs a buff.

Wood Elves(And argwylon) are easy. Get dryads+glade guard, build fortifications+income in your home base, crush brettonia, get all the amber tech(prioritizing growth, public order, harbor income and later income from razing/looting), get your tree to tier 3+confederate, max out your capital. Upgrade your armies from dryads as time permits, if WE swap for eternal guard+shields, wardancers of both variants and wildwood rangers, if argwylon start working your monstrous units in there. Dont squander ANY amber on units , ditch the ones that consume that resource immediately. Make sure to get the loot income+replenishment lord skills. Crush the world in a tide of green, razing+repopulating as you go. You should be aggressive within the first 20 turns, you can be aggressive within the first 10, especially as durthu.

Probably the easiest campaign in the game, but unfortunately also stupidly boring after just a couple dozen turns as you become horribly OP.

Also watch out for the beastmen coming to raze your settlement in the first 20 turns.

What does this mean. I can't get the same units as them?

What if I confederate?

You can field the same units, but because some cost amber, there is a focus on different types of armies (elves or forest spirits).

So I'm supposed to be aggressive early on? Is the starting army good enough to take on an army + garrison?

And how do you replenish without running back

Ahhh, this makes sense. I really do prefer the elves. Range ftw

Oh I see now. That's what is meant to be aggressive, sack and don't occupy just yet make money I see.

You can take any settlement, and there is a building that gives replenishment.
Take it, build it, replenish your stack(s). Afterwards, if you lose it, it's not a big deal, you can always come back later for the amber (and to deny the location to the enemy).

For Argwylon, late game elf units like waywatchers and wildwood rangers cost amber. For Wood Elves, late game forest spirit units like treemen and dragons cost amber. Amber use is defined by your starting faction and is unaffected by who you confederate.

Amber defines your campaign and you should basically never waste it on units (unless you're playing after completing ultimate campaign victory). So the upshot is that late game armies in Argwylon campaigns are completely different to late game armies in Wood Elf campaigns. Hence replayability.

Damn so you can't waste amber. Should I opt not to use those units or just very sparingly
Aenarion Jun 24, 2018 @ 6:20am
Never build them. You can use the ones you get at the start of the game until you need the amber for building upgrades or tech, though that will be pretty quick. Same for the ones you get through confederation - disband them.
